ADELAIDE, Australia - "Sam" the koala, who gained worldwide fame and sympathy when she was rescued during devastating wildfires this year, has died during surgery.
Wildlife centre spokeswoman Peita Elkhorne said the four-year-old koala died today while being operated on to remove ovarian cysts.
Sam was made famous by a photograph of her drinking from a firefighter's water bottle as wildfires ravaged Australia in February.
She suffered second- and third-degree burns to her paws and had been recuperating well.
But she developed cysts due to a life-threatening disease called urogenital chlamydiosis, which affects up to 50 per cent of Australia's koala population.

A new strain of HIV has been discovered in a woman from Cameroon. It differs from the three known strains and appears to be closely related to a form of the virus recently discovered in wild gorillas, researchers reported today in the journal Nature Medicine.
The finding "highlights the continuing need to watch closely for the emergence of new HIV variants, particularly in western central Africa," said the researchers, led by Jean-Christophe Plantier of the University of Rouen, France.
The three previously known HIV strains are related to the simian virus that occurs in chimpanzees.
The most likely explanation for the new find is gorilla-to-human transmission, Plantier's team said. But they added they cannot rule out the possibility that the new strain arose in chimpanzees and moved into gorillas and then humans, or moved directly from chimpanzees to both gorillas and humans.
The 62-year-old patient tested positive for HIV in 2004, shortly after moving to Paris from Cameroon, according to the researchers. She had lived near Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, but said she had no contact with apes or bushmeat.
The woman currently shows no signs of Aids and is not yet receiving antiviral drug treatment, the researchers said.
How widespread this strain is remains to be determined. The researchers said it could be circulating unnoticed in Cameroon or elsewhere. The virus's rapid replication indicates that it is adapted to human cells, they reported.
Modern Cannibalism.
When we hear about cannibalism today, we generally think of the movie Alive. The stranded victims of a plane crash, with no food, which have to resort to eating the flesh of their friends to survive. The desperation serves as a horrid, but understandable justification for the act. The Donner party was another example of the same desperation. 87 people on an expedition get lost in the mountains for months, some of the party went crazy and killed each other, and ate each other. By the time they were rescued nearly half were dead and several eaten. These kinds of stories have been the subject of more books; documentaries and feature films than you can count. But it seems justifiable to us. The desperation. Not having food, being so hungry and delirious that you actually get to a point where eating the flesh of a human being for sustenance, is a good idea. We may not want to do it, or cannot imagine ourselves doing it, but we do understand it.
The other common example of modern cannibalism is people who are just plain nuts. Number 1 on the list of psychotic cannibal mother fuckers, you know the name, Jeffrey Dahmer. The man who seduced young boys and drugged, sodomized, and ate them. When police caught Dahmer they found the severed head of a Cambodian teenager in his fridge, which has always made me wonder, “on what shelf in the fridge does one place a severed head. Does it go on the top shelf, or the vegetable drawer?” Would you like to know what else police found in Dahmer’s home? Ok I’ll tell you. Skulls were found stripped of hair and skin on shelves in the kitchen. A bucket was found full of severed hands. A torso was found in his kitchen sink that was ripped open from the neck to the groin, and next to that, a severed penis. A penis was also found in a lobster pot in the fridge. Finally, in a jar on the counter, and yes I’m serious, a pickled penis was found. Now what is strange to me about the pickled penis, is that I wonder if pickling was a culinary skill of Dahmer’s or did he learn it specifically for this one item? Hmm, I guess we’ll never know.
Then of course there was Ed Gein, not the cover boy that Dahmer was, but Gein was the Hollywood maniac. His story inspired films like Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and a really lousy low budget biopic titled Ed Gein. Now Gein is really not considered a cannibal, in fact he himself denied it, but this sick bastard is in the same company. Gein was a grave robber, who dug up women's bodies, chopped them up, and skinned them and made clothes out of their skin. He put skulls on the posts of his bed, and reupholstered his couch with female skin. When police raided his bachelor pad, they found a bucket of vulvas preserved in salt, and next to that, a bucket of noses. And though not technically a cannibal, it does at least appear that he is in the same ballpark.
Then there was Idi Amin; the man so affectionately referred to as “The Butcher of Uganda.” Amin was the president of Uganda in the 1970’s. He was a notorious ruler and was accused of cannibalizing some of his political opposition.
The list of modern individual cannibals goes on and on. But the extent to which cannibalism is a societal practice in the modern world is alarming. In 1997 starving people in North Korea had resorted to cannibalism because of the lack of food. In some instances parents were killing and eating their own infants. Imagine that, killing and eating your own child. There was one married couple in North Korea during this time, that were executed for killing 50 children, curing their flesh with salt, and storing them in a hut. Can you believe that, an example of societal cannibalism, only 9 years ago? And that is just North Korea. Cannibalism has been reported to have also been practiced in Indonesia as well as the Congo in recent years.
Human behavior amazes me. These incidents, whether its the psycho guy that lives in the middle of nowhere, or people in a third world country, are examples of extreme human behavior that seem to exist totally outside of our mindset. We see them like movies, or works of fiction. The idea that these things are really happening in the world is, excuse the pun, hard to swallow. But to me, its a part of the tapestry of life. We disregard it, when we need to examine it. We disregard these things because they exist outside of our ethical framework, but how do these actions by individuals and societies fit in with peoples morality, ethics, and religion. The values and morals that we cling to seem to are compromised by such things. Now I’m not asking if there is a place in heaven for a guy like Jeffrey Dahmer, what I’m asking is how can one believe in giving thanks to God when people are pushed to eat their own children. See the very existence of these forms of human behavior force us to ask larger questions, and it is for that reason that we cannot disregard them.
Well I hope you made it through without vomiting, just thought I’d give you some food for thought. And as you know I have an affinity for quotes and believe it or not I even found one on cannibalism. Police arrived within ten minutes of receiving a 999 call and arrested the 72-year-old, who was naked from the waist down.
Lynne Bennett, manager of Stepping Stones Farm in Stepney, East London, said the man appeared to have deliberately targeted their most passive pig.
She added: 'If he'd picked on one of the others, he would have been in serious trouble.
'They would have done him some damage.'

Flu Pandemic Morbidity / Mortality
Pandemic years are associated with many more cases of influenza and a higher case fatality rate than that seen in seasonal flu outbreaks. It is common to encounter clinical attack rate ranges for seasonal flu of 5% to 15% in the literature. For pandemic flu, clinical attack rates are reported in the range of 25% to 50%.
During a typical year in the United States, 30,000 to 50,000 persons die as a result of influenza viral infection. Frequently cited numbers are 20,000 deaths each year, and 37,000 annual deaths. About 5-10% of hospitalizations for influenza lead to fatal outcome in adults.
In normal years, although most influenza infection is in children, the serious morbidity and mortality is almost entirely among elderly people with underlying chronic disease. During influenza epidemics from 1979–80 through 2000–01, the estimated overall number of influenza-associated hospitalizations in the United States ranged from approximately 54,000 to 430,000/epidemic. An average of approximately 226,000 influenza-related excess hospitalizations occurred per year, with 63% of all hospitalizations occurring among persons aged > 65 years.
Influenza-related deaths can result from pneumonia and from exacerbations of cardiopulmonary conditions and other chronic diseases. Deaths of older adults account for > 90% of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza. In one study of influenza epidemics, approximately 19,000 influenza-associated pulmonary and circulatory deaths per influenza season occurred during 1976–1990, compared with approximately 36,000 deaths during 1990--1999. Estimated rates of influenza-associated pulmonary and circulatory deaths/100,000 persons were 0.4--0.6 among persons aged 0–49 years, 7.5 among persons aged 50--64 years, and 98.3 among persons aged > 65 years.
A different pattern may emerge in a pandemic. The 1918-19 pandemic affected mainly healthy young adults and seemed to spare those at the extremes of life. In the USA, the mortality rate during the 1918 pandemic pandemic was around 2.5%. Similarly, in 1957, the brunt fell on schoolchildren and young adults.
The number of hospitalizations and deaths will depend on the virulence of the pandemic virus. Estimates differ about 10-fold between more and less severe scenarios. Published estimates based on extrapolation of the 1957 and 1968 pandemics suggest that there could be 839,000 to 9,625,000 hospitalizations, 18-42 million outpatient visits, and 20-47 million additional illnesses, depending on the attack rate of infection during the pandemic. Estimates based on extrapolation from the more severe 1918 pandemic suggest that substantially more hospitalizations and deaths could occur. The demand for inpatient and intensive-care unit (ICU) beds and assisted ventilation services could increase by more than 25% under the less severe scenario.
Because the virulence of the influenza virus that causes the next pandemic cannot be predicted, two scenarios were presented by CDC, HHS and DHS based on extrapolation of past pandemic experience. The DHS estimates are suspect, since they appear to derive from a 1999 analysis that was based on the 1997 US population of 265 million. By 2005 the US population was about 295 million, so the DHS estimates are about 10% low simply due to the growth in population.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it has been estimated that in the absence of any control measures such as vaccination and drugs, a “medium-level” influenza pandemic in the United States could kill 89,000 to 207,000 people, affect from 15 to 35 percent of the U.S. population, and generate associated costs ranging from $71 billion to $167 billion. Another Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate suggested that, in the United States alone, up to 200 million people will be infected, 50 million people will require outpatient care, two million people will be hospitalized, and between 100,000 and 500,000 persons will die. These numbers are significantly higher than the estimates used by the Deparment of Homeland Security. The HHS notes that the death rate associated with the 1918 influenza applied to the current population would produce 1.9 million deaths in the United States and 180 million to 360 million deaths globally. It is most noteworthy that the "Low" scenario presented by HHS corresponds to the "High" scenario presented by DHS.
By 2005 the observed human avian flu case fatality rate declined to 34% (16/47) in northern Viet Nam, but was 83.3% (20/24) in southern Viet Nam. The case fatality rate in Thailand was 71% (12/17) and 100% in Cambodia (4/4) in 2004. The case fatality rate was 89% among those younger than 15 years of age in Thailand. Death occurred an average of 9 or 10 days after the onset of illness (range, 6 to 30) and most patients have died of progressive respiratory failure.
Avian Influenza (H5N1) viruses isolated from humans in Asia in 2004 exhibited increased virulence in laboratory test mammals compared to the viruses isolated from 1997 human cases. By one authoritative estimate, an H5N1 avian influenza that is transmittable from human to human could be devastating: assuming a mortality rate of 20 percent and 80 million illnesses, the United States could suffer 16 million deaths.
Undetected cases might imply that infections with H5N1 influenza may be more common than previously thought, suggesting that the overall case fatality rate may not be as high as previously suggested. It also raises the question of whether mild and/or asymptomatic cases of avian flu allow the virus more opportunities to mix, or "re-assort," with human-adapted flu viruses. This genetic mixing increases the likelihood of generating a virus that is able to efficiently spread from person to person.

John Kerswell: A Welsh plasterer transported in 1828 at the age of 20 years to 15 years for stealing. Absconding four times and charged with being drunk three times, granted ToL in 1856 and Conditional Pardon in 1857. However, he received 20 years imprisonment for attempting to stab a policeman. He was released from Port Arthur in 1875.
William Forster: At age 17 years was transported for ten years for stealing a box writing desk. Misdemeanour followed misdemeanour and sentence added to sentence until in 1864 he was sentnenced to life for robbery under arms. The last mention of him is in 1872 when he was sent to the Separate Prison for misconduct.
Alexander Woods: A soldier with the 17th Regiment, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Woods (aged 30) was transported from Canada to Port Arthur for 14 years for desertion.
Returned to Hobart with a ToL in 1853 but returned to PA again in 1865 for 15 years for burglary. He was a church attendant in 1869 and was discharged in 1875.

I met Michael (Tarzan) Fomenko(shown here at 81 years) son of a Russian Princess when I was 18 and he was twenty. He was a handsome young man. I was in love with his sister Nina Fomenko, who was gracious to me but held my ardour at arms' length. In later years I met her in North Queensland where she and her husband Brian Patrick Donnellan were cutting cane. They had no mattress to sleep on, so I bought them one. Nina was always beautiful. Toonoom Falls
Situated in the heart of Royal National Park to the south of Sydney, Toonoum Falls is a pretty, 5 metre high waterfall alongside Sir Bertram Steven Drive not far from the Garie turnoff. The photo shows the falls in flood.

Had been built in 1780 as Berwick for the East Indies run, badly burned in a fire, and rebuilt by Navy, renamed Sirius, finally wrecked off Norfolk Island on the 14th. of April 1790.

*The Australian Lyre Bird is the world's best imitator; able to mimic the calls of 15 different species of birds in their locality and string the calls into a melody. Also been known to mimic the sound mobile phones.
*The echidna is such a unique animal that it is classified in a special class of mammals known asmonotremes, which it shares only with the platypus. The echidna lays eggs like a duck but suckles its young in a pouch like a kangaroo. For no apparent reason, it may decide to conserve energy by dropping its body temperature to 4 degrees and remain at that temperature from 4 to 120 days. Lab experiments have shown that the echidna is more intelligent that a cat and it has been seen using its spikes, feet and beaks to climb up crevices like a mountaineer edging up a rock chimney.
*Purple wallaby - The Purple-neck Rock Wallaby [Petrogale Purpureicollis], inhabits the Mt Isa region in Northwest Queensland. The Wallaby secretes a dye that transforms its face and neck into colours ranging from light pink to bright purple.
*The Fierce Snake or Inland Taipan has the most toxic venom of any snake. Maximum yield recorded (for one bite) is 110mg. That would probably be enough to kill over 100 people or 250,000 mice.
*The Wombat deposits square poos on logs, rocks and even upright sticks that it uses tomark its territory.
*A 10kg Tasmanian Devil is able to exert the same biting pressure as a 40kg dog. It can also eat almost a third of its body weight in a single feeding.
*Australia is the smallest, flattest, and driest inhabited continent in the world. It is the only country which is also a whole continent.
*Over 90% of Australia is dry, flat and arid. Almost three-quarters of the land cannot support agriculture in any form.
*A baby kangaroo at the time of its birth measures 2 centimetres.

*Kangaroos need very little water to survive and are capable of going for months without drinking at all. When they do need water, they dig 'wells' for themselves; frequently going as deep as three or four feet. These 'kangaroo pits' are a common source of water for other animals living in the kangaroo's environment.

*Box Jelly fish - The box jellyfish is considered the world's most venomous marine creature. The box jellyfish has killed more people in Australia than stonefish, sharks and crocodiles combined.
*The Sydney Funnelweb spider is considered the world's most deadly spider. It is the only spider that has killed people in less than 2 hours. Its fangs are powerful enough to bite through gloves and fingernails. The only animals without immunity to the funnelweb's venom are humans and monkeys.
*Lung fish - Queensland is home to lung fish, a living fossil from the Triassic period 350 million years ago.
