A Red Gum.

A red-gum grows on Streaky-Rock Hill,

Where  kookaburras cackle and  cockatoos shrill,

Currawongs yodell and tomtits twitter,

 While lizards laze and butterflies flutter.

Dreamtime Koorie once wandered this land,

From far blue mountains, to rocky sea strand.

                         ***************

 Now gritty, city buildings crowd out the view,

Where wallabies thumped with the wallaroo...

Suburbs sprawl, spewing foul smog,

Where the bush was haven for boy and his dog.

  We roamed around high sandstone reaches,

And surfed wild Wattamolla’s beaches,

Digging for pippies with our feet,

And running naked in the heat,

Plunging headlong in the spray,

Just enjoying every day.

Catching whiting on the tide, and blackfish from the sheer cliff-side…..

 At night with campfire coals aglow,

 We slept with surf’s surging flow.

Where are you now,  freckled beach-girl ?

Remember our promise, so sure yet soon forgot?

I heard you married a lawyer. You said you wanted money. Did you get a lot?

Since then the years sped past, afloat with useless ballast, my die was cast.

 Now memories search not sensual pleasure.

(of which I’ve had considerable measure)

 But focus on that early time,

When the world was new

 And mine.

  I’ll rest by a hollow of this old gum-tree,

 Visions fading gradually,

Projecting to eternity,

While the world whirls by so frantically.

 A life misspent?   Yes, I’m to blame.

Luneta or Rizal Park, Ermita Philippines,

Do not talk  further about a contract.A contract in one country is not viable in another.....anyway  I think everything hinges on you getting a real birth certificate with your name on it.

  Many years ago before I met and married Lanie, I had met another young woman in Luneta Park. She stayed with me for a while and I eventually thought..".Oh well, I might as well marry her."  (I had been waiting for another girl, Rose Racho who I wanted to marry, from a previous  meeting and a brief love affair. I liked Rose a lot but I had to go back to Canada.She had given me an address in Illocos and I wrote there but got no  reply. All I knew  was she worked in Manila in a peanut factory.)

  Anyway this other girl whose name I forget, but her family name was  the same as the Spanish or  Portuguese captain who discovered the Philippines. Now  I remember.... Magellanes.... Well she was from San Carlos, not  too far from Canleon volcano in Negros Occidental.,,,,,This girl and I went to San Carlos and away into the boondocks to some of her cousins. 

 The"castellas" was  next the kitchen and when you did a taie, it dropped to the pig-pen below and the pigs grunted while eating it. This put me off. I found it hard to concentrate  on the job at hand.

Anyway, we could not go further to her mother's house, a shack in the mountains, because the  new Peoples' Army were around that area and likely to kill me, so the girl's cousin went by a windy trail across  the mountain and eventually  the next day the mother arrived on foot.

 Then came a problem. It seemed the mother had not registered the birth and there was no birth certificate. So marriage was not possible. however the girl and i went to see a lawyer and then to the courthouse in San Carlos. after money changed hands we emerged with a birth certificate.No father's name, though.

Well we went back to Manilla after going to Bacolod where I was threatened with death (another story) and since the threat was not an idle matter pertaining to the Encabo family, whose son Reggie had once been imprisoned for killing a man in a bar, and the other man shot him also, but Reggie lived since the bullet went into his brain and could never be taken out. Reggie was awfully aggressive after that. Myself I did not have a gun at that time, because I had been flying a lot on Philippine Air, island to island.

 Late I acquired a 6 shot revolver Smith and Wesson look-alike made in Davao, which was much later confiscated from me by the Barangay police when my mother-in-law Anit thought I was going to shoot her (I did not like her and she me.) but I was only pointing it at a male pig which the family were mating outside my window in Dagupan.That cost me a big bribe, more than I had paid for the revolver (bought originally from a police sergeant at Tondaligan, the sale arranged by my distant cousin another Aussie who had a bar restaurant  a bossy Filipina wife and a very young mistress on the side.  

  The Magallanes girl and I flew flew back to Manila, back to Ermita and the girl went back to her job at a beauty salon in Makati.I stayed in a cheap hotel close to Luneta Park where I conveniently picked up an extra girl most days.

The beauty salon had cats and the place smelled like cat urine.

So she came back to my hotel and we went through the tortuous officialdom of getting a passport for her. Eventually after weeks, we did.

We did not get married and this was for several reasons. She used to look up the Enquirer every day to find out if any foreigners were looking for companionship.  It seemed like she had been doing that before she met me and I naturally wondered if she could settle down in Canada with me. I decided she couldn't.

The second reason was she was fond of bago/on and stinky fish..Being human she used to fart in bed. To me it was the most dreadful stink I have ever encountered. I warned her never to eat bago/on or stinky fish again.

 One day she went to visit a girlfriend and came home late. I smelled her before she even opened the door.

Then I made a fast decision.

 I paid her money, three months salary at the beauty saloon and put her out. She screamed and banged on my door for an hour crying and screaming. I remember one thing she said "What am I going to tell my mother.?" I very nearly opened the door for her then. Eventually she left and I found myself crying.

After I had married Lanie and we were in our house Dagupan, somehow a letter got to me from this girl. She said she was going to scratch Lanie's eyes out. Lanie laughed  At that time she thought she had made a good deal in me. Later though she changed her mind.

I felt very close to this Magellanes girl and had a strong feeling for her.

Lanie was prettier than her, but Lanie and I never clicked.We were always strangers. She said she never felt married to me. somehow when I was making love to Lanie  it felt inutile sa utin. I could never really get aroused. I am not sure how we had twin boys and before that a poor little baby girl who lived only three days

hi Michelle thanks for your complimenT about the story. i was married about 6 years to her. actually i was too old for her  ...34 years. there was wrong on both sides. anyway i spent a lot of money on her. she still has the house i built for her at dagupan and quite a few thousands of dollars besides.the expanded story which  I will add to bit by bit is on my website named " me in the philippines" my website is: williamsfamilyfirstblogspot.com.fleeters.

If you get accepted by a nursing school maybe there is a better way to transfer money. My bank tells me that if you have a cellphone money can sent by cellphone and the charge is only $5 each time. When the time comes you will fill in some sort of form and then give your cell-phone number and you will be able to get the money instantly. So keep your cell-phone account going,

I had an earlier wife too. whose mother was Mimi Araneta cousin to one of the very rich prominent families (Araneta colliseum, Araneta shopping malls etc, senator Araneta and maybe a vice president.And wasn't there a rich playboy tennis-player Araneta who married Corie Aquino's daughter?

I do no know the Aranetas personally, though I believe they are connected to my aunties's family,the Teoticos and Roxas(Manuel Roxas ex president and his grandson Manuel Roxas II, (Maa) last year's vice presidential candidate.

Anyway that just makes me a poor relation has-been.

Strangely another of my daughters Nina is the daugther of a lady who was Countess di Tivoli, though she probably does not even know that.

Afrodite Gerondakis was the count di Tivoli's cousin on Corfu, an island in the Addriatic .Apparently Afroditi's family paid the count's gambling debts and Afroditi married her cousin the count.

Because Afroditi caught him in bed with her best friend a girl named Lilly, she left him and eventually made her way to Melbourne Australia where I She became acquainted on Heidelberg railway station, speaking to her in my dialect Italian and inadequate French. She went with me because she admired the French actor Alain Delon, who she thought I resembled.

We had a daughter Nina.
