The world’s best cities are still in Switzerland A report by Mercer Consulting 3 April 2007: Zurich and Geneva are the best cities in the world as far as quality of life is concerned, says Mercer Consulting in a survey published in April 2007. Vancouver (Canada) is placed third, followed by Vienna (Austria), Auckland (New Zealand), Düsseldorf (Germany) and Frankfurt (Germany). Paris, London and Madrid are in the lower half of the top-50 table. Overall, Baghdad is not surprisingly the lowest ranking city in the survey. EIU names Vancouver, Melbourne and Vienna as 'best' cities in the world Other cities in Europe and Australia continue to dominate the top end of the rankings for overall quality of living. In fact, there are very few changes in the top half of the 2007 table. Auckland and Düsseldorf share joint fifth place and score 107.3 points. Frankfurt and Munich follow with scores of 107.1 and 106.9 respectively. Bern and Sydney both score 106.5 points and share joint 9th place. However, Paris is only ranked 33rd, with London in 39th place. Madrid improved from 45th, in 2006, to 42nd place in 2007. Oslo gains five places at the expense of Dublin, which drops to 27th place. The analysis is based on an evaluation of 39 quality-of-living criteria for each city including political, social, economic and environmental factors, personal safety and health, education, transport and other public services. Baghdad remains the world’s least enticing city for expatriates with a score of 14.5. Other low-scoring cities for overall quality of living include Brazzaville in Congo (29.5), Bangui in the Central African Republic (30.6) and Khartoum in Sudan (31). The survey makes clear that in recent years, the gap between low-ranking and high-ranking cities had widened. “While standards have improved in some regions, there remains a stark contrast between those cities where overall quality of living is good and those experiencing political and economic turmoil,” the authors say. • Afghan Pine Scientific Name: Pinus eldarica Full Sun: Full or partial shade - USDA Zone: 6 - 10 Afghan pine/Desert pine is a fast growing evergreen tree and can used as border landscaping. Can grow up to 80ft. tall and 30ft. wide. Low water once established. Also called Mondell pine. Desert Willow Scientific Name: Chilopsis linearis Sun: Full Sun - USDA Zone 7 - 9 Desert willow grows to about 25ft tall. If you are looking to attract hummingbirds then this is the tree to get. Beautiful light purple blooms very hardy shrub or tree. Very drought tolerant once established. More Desert Willow Information  Mesquite Tree/shrub Scientific Name: Prosopis juliflora Full Sun - USDA - Zone: 7 - 10 Mesquite has green foliage and dedicious. Large sweet edible pods on brances. Very drought tolerant tree. Grows about 15-20ft tall and wide. Has large thorns can be easily trained as a tree. Mimosa or Silk Tree Scientific Name: Albizia julibrissin Full Sun - USDA - Zones: 6b thru 9 The Mimosa can withstand droughts beautiful pink spike blooms at top. Can grow to about 15-20ft. tall and wide. Very low water once established. Beautiful spiky dark blue blooms late spring early summer.  Live Oak Scientific Name: Quercus virginiana  Sun: Full Sun - USDA Zones: 7-10 Southern Live Oak - Can grow up to 80-100ft. Live oak is a long-lived, massive, evergreen shade tree. Its horizontal branches form a broad rounded canopy. This tree loves full sun and is a slow grower. Moderate water once established. Live oak tree information here  Weeping Mulberry Scientific Name: Morus alba pendule Can take Full USDA Zone 4-9 This weeping mulberry can grow up to 15-20ft tall not as wide. Tree froms a beautiful shade canopy. Perfect for kid to hide in. 
  As recent bushfireshave shown, Eucalyptus (gum trees) are an extreme fire hazard. These trees the  leaves and bark of which contain highly flammable and volatile oils, become a raging inferno with high temperatures and scorching winds.
• Australia will have many huge bushfires in the future, worse than before because of higher average temperatures, lower rainfall and  water shortages.
