Thai transvestites compete in Miss Tiffany Universe

Dolled up to the nines in satin, sequins and lace, their dazzling white-toothed smiles adorned with thick lipstick and their eyes artfully smeared with shadow, the contestants descended upon Pattaya, a beach resort around a hundred miles south of the capital Bangkok.

The beauty pageant captures the attention of the south-east Asian kingdom every year, with winners often going on to careers in television or modelling.

This year the winner was one Kangsadarn Wongdusadeekul, mercifully known by her more manageable stage name “Nonk”, who tearfully accepted the prize of 100,000 baht (around £1,600) and a car.

Thailand has one of the world's largest and most visible transgendered communities: recently, one secondary school built new lavatories after discovering that 200 students were between genders. Gay activists worry that social pressures might push young boys to undergo castration, a decision they might regret later. But one doctor counters that if a boy has "a woman's heart in a man's body and doesn't want to keep his testicles, the change should be allowed."

Dilemma.

N Korea 'ready to launch missile' The launch site at Tongchang-ni is said to be ready to use after 10 years of construction [GlobalSecurity] There is growing speculation that North Korea may be preparing to launch another new medium or long-range missile. Satellite images from the GlobalSecurity website show the new Tongchang-ni launch site in the North's west coast near China and is reportedly ready for use after nearly a decade of construction. The launch tower and what appears to be construction materials on the launch pad are seen in the images, according to Tim Brown, a senior fellow with GlobalSecurity. He speculated the debris may be there to make the pad appear as though it is still under construction. "The launch pad appears to be operational,'' Brown said. North Korea last launched a long-range missile in April. It has since carried out a nuclear test and several short-range missile tests. The news of the suspected launch preparation came as South Korean media reported on Friday of US intentions to implement financial sanctions on Pyongyang in an effort to punish the country over its weapons trading and counterfeit activities. US warning In depth North Korea's nervous neighbours N Korea's nuclear trump card A state of war Timeline: N Korea's bomb Obama condemns 'reckless' N Korea N Korea nuclear test angers China Seoul joins US anti-WMD drive Markets rattled by N Korea test World reaction: N Korea bomb test Warning the North that its actions will "no longer be rewarded", James Steinberg, the US deputy secretary of state, told Lee Myung-bak, the South Korean president, that "North Korea would be mistaken if it thinks it can make provocations and then get what it wants through negotiation as it did in the past. The US won't repeat the same mistake again". Steinberg, on a four-day visit to Seoul, is accompanied by a senior US treasury official who oversaw previous financial restrictions on the North. As international pressure heightens, tensions continue to rise on the Korean peninsula, and on Thursday, South Korean officials said a patrol boat from the North entered its waters around their disputed maritime border, but backed off after nearly an hour following repeated warnings. The naval standoff came amid concerns that the North might try to provoke an armed clash in the area - the scene of deadly naval skirmishes in 1999 and 2002. Meanwhile, international powers continue to work on an appropriate response to the North's nuclear test and missile launches. On Thursday. ambassadors from key nations say they are nearing an agreement on new UN-backed sanctions against North Korea for violating UN resolutions and conducting a second nuclear test. The proposals for a new UN resolution are being discussed by the five veto-wielding Security Council nations - the US, China, Russia, Britain and France - and also Japan and South Korea, the two countries most closely affected by the test. They have been holding closed-door meetings since May 26, a day after North Korea's underground nuclear test.

A rogue state or terrorist
organization could easily acquire nuclear material for a smaller weapon for $20m," says Charles Manto, president of Instant Access Networks corp.

"That weapon could be fitted onto a Scud missile for as little as $100,000, fired and detonated 80 miles into the air and affect the entire US east coast," he adds.

Manto has just scored some state funding to prep the Maryland power grid for the inevitable terrorist Scud nuke pulse strike. He reckons to do this using "patent-pending shielding technology that encloses a room or similar structure and protects it from EMP events ... [the] shielding, which includes layers of steel and aluminum, is up to 70 per cent lighter than materials traditionally used ... This enables EMP-safe rooms to be portable."

In addition to the portable tinfoil rooms, the plan is to establish pulse-proof "microgrids" powered by renewable energy sources such as windmills.

"A residential-scale wind turbine" will be pulse-hardened and used to start with, apparently. (That is, a rooftop windmill of the type which is about as much use as a chocolate teapot).

We can't help feeling that the microgrid/tin-room/rooftop-windmill plan doesn't go far enough. Surely some kind of wearable rig would also be in order, featuring the traditional pulse-proof hat coupled with an on-head wind turbine providing reliable power for one's personal electronics. ®

Last Post. Goodbye Dig'.

http://www.theage.com.au/national/last-remaining-digger-australias-oldest-man-jack-ross-dies-aged-110-20090603-buy4.html 7:54PM Wednesday Jun 03, 2009 Australia's oldest man and last remaining World War I digger Jack Ross has died, aged 110. Mr Ross died peacefully in his sleep at the Golden Oaks Nursing Home in the central Victorian city of Bendigo about 4am this morning. As an 18-year-old Mr Ross enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in January, 1918 and trained at the wireless training school before he was posted to the 1st Battalion at Broadmeadows camp in Victoria. But the war ended before he could be posted overseas and he was demobilised on Christmas Eve. He served Australia again in World War II as a member of the volunteer defence corps. Mr Ross was awarded the 80th Anniversary Armistice Remembrance medal in 1998 to commemorate the end of WWI. He also received the Centenary Medal for his contribution to Australian society in the 100 years since federation. In civilian life Mr Ross worked for the Victorian railways for more than 45 years before retiring in 1964. He is survived by his daughter Peggy, son Robert, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Wreck of the Neva

"....the women on board the doomed ship, seeing themselves thus abandoned, set up a great despairing wail." CHRIS HALLS Australia's Worst Shipwreck
Tasmania's second worst shipwreck was that of the female convict ship Neva, wrecked on reefs north of King Island on 13 May 1835 with the loss of 224 lives. Come to King Island: The Neva sailed from Cork, Ireland for Sydney on 8 January 1835 carrying 150 female convicts with 33 children, nine free women (probably wives of convicts) with 22 children, under the care of Surgeon Superintendent John Stephenson, R.N., and 26 crew under the command of Captain Benjamin Peck. The voyage, unlike that of the George III at the same time, was almost completely free of incident and illness. With the deaths of a crewman, a convict and a free woman, and one birth, during the voyage, by the time the Australian coastline was reached the total complement was 239. At noon on 12 May the ship's position was calculated as being 90 miles west of King Island and a course was shaped to pass 14 miles north of the Harbinger Reefs at the island's northern end. At around 2 a.m. on the 13th, however, land was seen an estimated nine miles ahead and Peck ordered a more northerly course. Three hours later the lookout called the dreaded warning "breakers ahead!" The helm was put over hard to starboard and the ship went about with her head into the wind, but she suddenly struck a submerged rock and her rudder was carried away. While efforts were made to get her back under control, her bow struck the main reef and she swung broadside on. With heavy seas breaking over her, the Neva was soon bilged and filled with water, and the cutting away of the fore-mast and main and mizzen top masts did little to help. The straining of the hull caused the prison stanchions to collapse, and soon there were 200 panic-stricken women and children on deck. Many ran straight to the poop and cuddy where the Government stores, including rum, were held. The liquor was broached and many of the women were soon helplessly drunk, some to be killed when the poop collapsed in on them as the ship broke up. All efforts to launch the boats ended in disaster. Captain Peck escaping the swamping of two of the boats, including the long-boat which was overwhelmed by the panicking women. Finally, the ship completely broke up, parting in two amidships, then the upper works of both sections floated up from the bottom to form two rafts. Fortunately, the wind and current were in the right direction as the rafts drifted towards the shore of King Island, carrying the few remaining survivors. The forward deck, with the mast still sticking through it, grounded about three-quarters of a mile offshore and broke up. Of about 20 people on board only three, including Captain Peck, managed to swim ashore. The other raft was more fortunate, drifting onto a beach where the 19 on board, including Chief Officer Bennett, stepped ashore with ease. A desolate coastline with no shelter apart from the odd bush presented itself to the 22 who came ashore, and the death-roll was not yet complete. A keg of rum came ashore and Peck doled out a ration to each survivor before they went to sleep that night, huddled under the bushes. When he awoke the following morning, the captain was horrified to find that four women and a boy had died from exposure. During the course of the morning two more women died, reducing the number of survivors to 15. Although these deaths were no doubt ultimately caused by exposure, at least two, if not more, "were aided if not caused by the inordinate use of rum." However, with discipline restored, and a rough shelter erected from timber washed ashore, along with a few undamaged casks of flour and salt pork, the position looked somewhat improved. Hopeful of finding further castaways, Peck and Bennett, each with two of the crew, headed in opposite directions. Ninety-five bodies were found and buried in shallow graves but no more survivors were located. A fortnight after the wreck, the castaways met up with two of the crew of the Tartar, about 30 miles to the south-east earlier in the month. They led the survivors to the nearby hut of a sealer John Scott, who provided them wallabies killed by his dogs. Early in June the schooner Sarah Ann arrived at New Year Island, with Charles Friend searching for his missing Tartar, and met up with the cutter's crew and 12 of the Neva's survivors, two men and a woman apparently being off hunting at the time. The Sarah Ann took Peck on board and headed for her original destination of Port Fairy, but, headed by heavy gales, returned to New Year Island where it was decided to pick up the rest of the Neva survivors and take them to Launceston. One woman, Rose Hyland, objected to leaving the island, leveling a pistol at Friend and Bennett, and had to be overpowered before being carried on board the schooner. The Sarah Ann finally arrived at George Town on 26 June and the Neva survivors were soon at Launceston. The Government cutter Charlotte was sent to King Island to pick up the three survivors who were still off hunting when the Sarah Ann left, and an inquiry was held, exonerating Pick from any blame for the loss of the ship. Initial press reports are adamant that the Neva was wrecked on the Navarine Reefs, which lie north-east of Cape Wickham. However, the inquiry went to considerable lengths to demonstrate that the ship had run onto the Harbinger Reefs, north-west of the Cape and twice as far from it as the Navarines. It is a mystery that will not be solved till the treacherous waters north of King Island receive a thorough survey. Neva was a barque of 327 tons, 104ft.4in. x 27ft.1in x 6ft.5in. between decks, built at Hull, England by Firbank and Rumney in 1813, and was registered at London in the names of S. Masters and J. Lachlan.

Gays in Early Australia.

From the early 18th Century, the United Kingdom developed its own distinct underground gay subculture, with men gathering secretly in so-called "Molly houses" - illegal bars and taverns that were the precursors of modern gay bars. Molly culture was closely associated with cross-dressing and drag, and rather than seeking out 'rough trade', most Mollies seemed to have preferred other effeminate men as partners. Of course, when civil society found out about the existence of the Molly houses, they were outraged, and a vigorous police crackdown ensued. When Mollies were arrested and thrown into London's floating prison hulks, they would have encountered an entirely darker kind of male-to-male sexuality - prison rape and sex traded for protection and favours. During the First and Second Fleet, little effort was made to segregate the young and vulnerable from the older men, and with prisoners sleeping six to each tiny cell, it's not hard to imagine what must have gone on. Later fleets corrected this problem - placing the younger men and teens in separated lodging. The term Molly has been found in early accounts from the colony while others commented on the unseemliness of a certain class of convict - young men who gave themselves feminine nicknames and wore their hair in women's styles. With only 189 women convicts amongst the 1,373 British to land at Port Jackson, both would have found themselves in considerable demand - and this gender imbalance would not be corrected for many decades. Lesbianism among female convicts, kept mostly segregated from the males, is also recorded, but was viewed simply as a curiosity - girl-on-girl action not being viewed as real sex at the time. These early days of the colony seem to have included a fairly lax attitude to male homosexuality. Although it's first governor, Arthur Phillip, stated the only two offences deserving death were murder and sodomy, the first trial for such a crime did not occur until 1796 and that penalty was not prescribed. Phillip even went so far as to say that sodomites should be given to cannibals to be eaten, writing, "I would wish to confine the criminal until an opportunity offered of delivering him to the natives of New Zealand, and let them eat him. The dread of this will operate much stronger than the fear of death." Despite this, the first recorded execution for a homosexual act did not occur until 1828, when Alexander Brown, chief officer on the whaling ship Royal Sovereign, and crewmember Richard Lister were ordered to hang by the neck by a Sydney court. Lister was given a last minute reprieve and deported from the colony, but Brown did not fair so well. Gay convicts lucky enough to be sent to Norfolk Island (an otherwise notoriously harsh and remote penal settlement) during the rule of the prison reformer Alexander Maconochie, led a much different life. On an island known for its food shortages and harsh punishments, Maconochie instituted a regime based on reward and tolerance rather than cruelty. According to Robert Stuart, a magistrate who visited the island during Maconochie's rule, it was common for convicts to live together as couples - referring to each other as "husband and wife", and there may have been well over 100 such pairs on the island at any one time. Stuart observed, "These parties manifest as much eagerness for the society of each other as members of the opposite sex." Under Maconochie, convicts caught having sex still faced flogging but, compared to the rest of the British Empire, the punishment was mild. Around this time, the colony's first known beat was mentioned in the Sydney Gazette as being located at Mrs Macquarie's Chair [now a famous and respectable landmark in Sydney's Royal Botanical Gardens]. Formerly the favourite ship watching spot of Elizabeth, wife of the colony's sixth Governor, Lachlan Macquarie, by the 1830s it was reported to be unsafe because of the unsavoury acts occurring there. Reportedly, gay men were still cruising each other at the spot over a century later in the 1950s. The last gay execution occurred in Tasmania in 1863, when a black South African convict named Hendrick Witnalder and an unnamed 14-year-old boy were charged with sodomy. The boy was eventually set free but Witnalder, of tiny stature, was hanged with weights tied to his feet in case his body was too light to break his neck. Surprisingly, Australia's highest-ranking gay leader to date may have predated this. In 1859, Robert Herbert became the first Colonial Secretary (the equivalent of Premier) of Queensland. His Attorney General was John Bramston and both had lived together since meeting at Oxford University as students in the early 1850s. The two most powerful men in the state shared a grand house and gardens they built together named "Herston" - a combination of their last names. Their friendship lasted over 50 years during which they were rarely apart. Herbert's explanation for his lifelong bachelorhood: "It does not seem to me reasonable to tell a man who is happy and content, to marry a woman who may turn out to be a great disappointment". Looking back, it seems odd people didn't ask questions but during this period, and right up until World War I, presumably straight men were allowed a closeness and affection for each other rarely seen today. Referred to by historians as "romantic friendships", it was not uncommon for such men to write what would today seem like love letters to each other and to pose for portraits together holding hands or embracing - even reclining in each other's arms on couches. Many of these friendships were only that but they must have presented the perfect cover for gay men of the time.

Jean-Louis Borloo, the French minister in charge of transport, said hijacking had been ruled out.

The plane lost radio contact over the Atlantic while flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris
He said there were "powerful" tropical storms in the area where the airliner disappeared from radar screens.

"It is the kind of jet made to handle this kind of circumstance but there must have been a build-up of circumstances," he said.

Barry Gromett, a meteorologist at the London Weather Centre, said that the aircraft was passing through an area known as the Intertropical Convergence Zone.

"It is a zone in the tropics where you can have particularly deep thunder clouds," he said.

TRUGERNANNER (TRUGANINI) (1812?-1876), Tasmanian Aboriginal, was born in Van Diemen's Land on the western side of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, in the territory of the south-east tribe. Her father was Mangerner, leader of one of the tribe's bands, and in her adolescence she was associated with its traditional culture, making occasional visits to Port Davey. The tribe was disrupted by European sealers, whalers and timber-getters; by March 1829, when she and her father met G. A. Robinson at Bruny Island, her mother had been killed by sailors, her uncle shot by a soldier, her sister abducted by sealers, and Paraweena, a young man who was to have been her husband, murdered by timber-getters. At Bruny Island mission in 1829 she 'married' Woorraddy, from Bruny. They were associated with all the missions that Robinson and his sons conducted around Tasmania in 1830-35; they acted as guides and as instructors in their languages and customs, which were recorded by Robinson in his journal, the best ethnographic record now available of traditional Tasmanian Aboriginal society.

Trugernanner, Woorraddy and other Aboriginals from Robinson's mission arrived at the Flinders Island settlement in November 1835. With the hundred or so captured Aboriginals still alive they were to be 'christianized and europeanized' and taught to be farmers. She was renamed Lallah Rookh by Robinson, but held to her traditional ways. In March 1836 she and Woorraddy returned to Tasmania to search in vain for the one family remaining in the north-west. By July 1837 when they went back to Flinders Island, many had died there and Robinson's programme had proved unsuccessful. Trugernanner told him that all the Aboriginals would be dead before the houses being constructed for them were completed.

In February 1839, with Woorraddy and fourteen other Aboriginals, she accompanied Robinson to Port Phillip. She and four others, without Woorraddy, later joined a party of whalers near Portland Bay. In 1841 all five Aboriginals were charged with the murder of two whalers and in January 1842 the two men were hanged. In July Trugernanner and two other women, Fanny and Matilda, were sent back to Flinders Island with Woorraddy who, however, died en route. She lived with the Aboriginal Alphonso until October 1847 when, with forty-six others, she moved to a new establishment at Oyster Cove, in her traditional territory. She resumed much of her earlier life-style, diving for shellfish, visiting Bruny Island by catamaran, and hunting in the near-by bush. By 1869 she and William Lanney were the only full bloods alive. The mutilation of Lanney's body after his death in March led Trugernanner to express concern; she told Rev. H. D. Atkinson, 'I know that when I die the Museum wants my body'.

In 1874 she moved to Hobart Town with her guardians, the Dandridge family, and died in Mrs Dandridge's house in Macquarie Street on 8 May 1876, aged 64. She was buried at the old female penitentiary at the Cascades at Midnight on 10 May. Her body was exhumed in December 1878 by the Royal Society of Tasmania, authorized by the government to take possession of her skeleton on condition that it be not exposed to public view but 'decently deposited in a secure resting place accessible by special permission to scientific men for scientific purposes'. But it was placed in the Tasmanian Museum where it was on public display in 1904-47. Trugernanner was the most famous of the Aboriginal Tasmanians, but her life is shrouded in myth and legend. As the faithful companion of Robinson in 1829-35, she assisted in bringing in her compatriots because she wanted to save them from European guns. The establishment at Flinders Island was a grave disappointment to her. Small in stature, forceful, gifted and courageous, she held European society in contempt and made her own adjustment on her own terms.

Shooting of US abortion doctor shocks Obama

Dr George Tiller who was killed by a gunman as he entered his church in Wichita yesterday while his wife sat in the choir

Violence returned to the abortion debate in the United States yesterday when a doctor who has long been the target of right-to-life activists was gunned down and killed in a church in Kansas where he was an usher.

Lawyers for George Tiller, a 67-year-old doctor who has long been one of only a few in the US willing to perform so-called "late-term" abortions, confirmed that he had been killed in the attack, which happened as he walked into the Reformation Lutheran Church in his home town of Wichita.

It was only two weeks ago that President Barack Obama gave a major speech on the abortion issue at Notre Dame University, one of the leading Catholic campuses in America. He urged both sides in the debate to avoid extremist positions even though their disagreements may be profound. Last night President Obama said he was shocked and outraged over the killing. Dr Tiller's attorney, Dan Monnat, said Tiller's wife, Jeanne, was in the choir at the time.

Ric'sComment: ..........................

Why is it that I do not feel "shock or outrage?"....Yet I felt shock and outrage when I saw videos of late term abortions on live, sentient little babies squirming in obvious agony as they had their  limbs and head cut off with a scalpel so they could pass through the birth canal by abortion doctors such as the one murdered.

So sorry Dr Tiller. tut tut.http://www.prolifetraining.com/Abortion-Video.htm

May I add?....I feel shock and outrage when I see photos of children killed in raids on "taliban" ordered by this marvellous new president  Obama, continuing Bush's war policy.(Ric)

A public furor over civilian casualties has inflamed tensions between the U.S.-led coalition and Mr. Karzai, who called the latest deaths "unacceptable" shortly before meeting President Obama at the White House.

Last summer, the U.S. military initially disputed claims by Afghan and U.N. officials of up to 90 civilian deaths from a strike in Herat province. After an investigation and widespread protests, the U.S. military put the death toll at 33.

In the latest incident, villagers initially claimed to news agencies that 70 to 100 people or more may have died in the bombing raids late Tuesday in Farah province, a Taliban stronghold that borders Iran and Helmand province, the main source of the country's illicit opium trade.

ICRC spokeswoman Jessica Barry said a Red Cross team sent to investigate found leveled homes and dead bodies, including women and children.

"Their impression was that there were dozens of dead," she told Agence France-Presse. "We can absolutely confirm that there are civilian casualties." One victim was a community volunteer for the Afghan Red Crescent Society, who was killed with 13 members of his family, she said.

"Here for  the hearts and minds of Afghanis"

Oh yeah? Pull the other leg.

The anatomy of this latest in a string of collateral and bad intelligence-driven killings of Afghan civilians provides a perfect view of the state of the military mission there and its predictable effects on the population, and on the level of acceptance of our presence by Afghans. The airstrikes which destroyed a community of homes was preceded by a typically fierce firefight between Afghan/coalition forces and Taliban combatants who had gotten the better of the skirmish, managed to destroy some vehicles, and had killed a number of soldiers, including one American. It's at that point that reports say that U.S. airstrikes were called in to help in the pursuit of the fighter

Move elephants into Australia, scientist proposes

Feb. 1, 2012

and World Science staff

Australia may need an infusion of elephants and other large mammals to solve its persistent ecological and wildfire problems, a scientist proposes.

Ecologist David Bowman of the University of Tasmania in Australia cites out-of-control fires and burgeoning feral-animal populations as quandaries afflicting the Land Down Under. Both could be solved by introducing large mammals, as well as paying aboriginal hunters to control the feral animals and restore the old practice of patch burning, he argues. Patch burning is a form of controlled burning intended to clean out and renew biological resources.

“I realize that there are major risks associated with what I am proposing,” as any tinkering with the environment can lead to unplanned consequences, said Bowman. “But the usual approaches to managing these issues aren’t working.”

Bowman describes his idea in this week’s issue of the research journalNature.

Feb. 7 will mark the three-year anniversary of “Black Saturday,” when nearly 200 people died in a massive firestorm in southern Australia. Fires are a constant concern in the continent, said Bowman, but so are its thriving populations of feral pigs, camels, horses and cattle, among others.

Bowman proposes to manage Australia’s troubled ecosystem by introducing beasts such as elephants, rhinoceros and even Komodo dragons. These would help consume flammable grasses and control feral-animal populations, he argues.

The largest living land mammal native to Australia is the red kangaroo, which as an adult weighs about as much as an average man. Larger mammals used to roam the continent—such as a hippo-sized marsupial related to the wombat and called diprotodon, from the Great Ice Age—but they are no more.

The deliberate introduction by humans of populations of oversized, non-native mammals to a new continent would be unprecedented in modern times. One group, though, has proposed introducing large African mammals into the Great Plains of the United States, for somewhat different reasons than those motivating Bowman.

Carol Baxter is my distant cousin. She has not directly contributed to this weblog, and has not ever in fact acknowledged its existence, but because of the valuable information I received from reading her website about our family, I am very indebted to her.
Another family website helped me considerably. This was "Our Williams Story" by another distant cousin, Kieran Williams
Our Williams Story
I am heartened by the many emerging websites about the descendants of William Nash and Maria Haynes.
Then there are the many threads from Monaro Pioneers.
Thank you for all the sources.
I am hoping that when I am no longer able to continue (being nearly 79) that someone else wll pick up the ball and continue my blog.Of course I have included my political views and my non-religious attitudes because they are part of me and readers do not have to accept them, but may actually learn a little from them.

William Nash came to Australia as a Marine with the First Fleet 1788
William and Mariah's first child, William, was baptised on Sunday 25th May 1788
A wedding was celebrated at St Phillip's, Sydney, on 13 February 1789, between William Nash, a marine, and Maria Haynes, a convict, in the presence of Elizabeth Gratten and Samuel Barnes (Chaplain's clerk)
Mariah Haynes is not listed in John Cobley's 'Crimes of the First Fleet Convicts'
By 1803 William & Maria had separated, and she took the children with her. Maria later became associated with two other men, Robert Guy and in 1816, with William Neale.

6 Children1. William Nash born on 25 May 1788, buried on Friday 19th June 1789, a marine's child.
2. John Nash baptised 15 Jan 1792 (a family source names him William)
3. Mary Nash born 2 March 1793 and baptised 2 April
4. William Nash born 27 March 1795 and baptised 4 May
5. George Nash born 26 July 1797
6. Sarah Nash was born 16 Nov 1798
6. Sarah Nash 16 Nov 1798 wed on the 15th January 1814 at St John's, Parramatta, to John Williams (a convict), 13 children

On 25th April 2010 Stephen Hawking, leading academic and cosmologist, told the Sunday Times: “We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.” He also points out that making contact with aliens could be very risky, stating: “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”

curious street title

Gropecunt Lane

Gropecunt Lane was a name used in Oxford, London and other Englishtowns and cities in the Middle Ages for streets where prostitutes conducted their business. The name derives from cunt, the Middle English term forfemale genitalia, and the act of groping. There was also a Gropecunt Lane inDublin, Ireland near where the Savoy Cinema is now. Later sensibilities changed many names of streets bearing this name to more polite variations.

In London, the street that was Gropecunt Lane was near the present-day site of the Barbican Centre in the City of London. The street was called Grub Street in the 18th century, but renamed Milton Street in 1830 . Another street with a similar history in Southwark is Horselydown Lane ("whores lie down"), which is just to the south of Tower Bridge, and was also the site of the famousAnchor Brewhouse.

We come in Third with Williams.

Williams

is a patronymic form of the name William that originated in medieval England[2] and later came to be extremely popular in Wales. The meaning is derived from son or descendant of Guillemin, the French form of William. Derived from an Old French given name with Germanicelements; will = desire, will; and helm = helmet, protection.[3] It is the second most common surname in Wales and the third most common surname in the whole of the United Kingdom, the third most common in the United States of America and Australia and the fifth most common inNew Zealand.[4]

Old Harry Williams was asked how was it that the long list of Williams lead by far those of Nash over the last couple of hundred years.

"Well, let's see.Them Nashes they was more posh and they kept the family bible, so we lot had nothing to read at night. There was no T.V. in them days, and we didn't want to waste candles, so we used to all jump in bed together and make more Williams's."

Australia. The first fleet sailed from England in 1787 carrying marine William Nash and his common law wife Maria Haynes. They were the progenitors of an extensive Nash family in Australia. Another early settler was Andrew Nash. He had acquired the Woolpack Inn in Parramatta in 1821 and became well-known for the prowess of his racehorses. A later settler from Wiltshire was James Nash. He discovered gold along the Mary river in Queenland and helped precipitate the second Australian gold rush.

There were also Nash convicts in Australia. Some thrived; Robert Nash, transported on the Albemarle in 1791; John Nash on the Eleanor in 1831; and Michael Nash from Limerick, on the Rodney in 1851.

This is my niece in the Philippines who
needs serious attention from some sincere young man.

Neither here nor there.

If a man was on an escalator, but walking back down it and the elevator was located in a revolving restaurant on a large airliner going in a southerly direction and the earth was revolving on its axis and at the same time was travelling in an elliptical path around the sun, which was travelling around the galaxy, which was expanding......how many movements was the man travelling in?

Wild man of North Australia.

I met Michael (Tarzan) Fomenko(shown here at 81 years) son of a Russian Princess when I was 18 and he was twenty. He was a handsome young man. I was in love with his sister Nina Fomenko, who was gracious to me but held my ardour at arms' length. In later years I met her in North Queensland where she and her husband Brian Patrick Donnellan were cutting cane. They had no mattress to sleep on, so I bought them one. Nina was always beautiful. Situated in the heart of Royal National Park to the south of Sydney, Toonoum Falls is a pretty, 5 metre high waterfall alongside Sir Bertram Steven Drive not far from the Garie turnoff. The photo shows the falls in flood.
Location: Royal National Park.

In the fifties, I lived close to here in a rock shelter once used by Aborigines. I used to swim in this creek a little further down the hill. My family thought I was crazy and I probably was, but life here on the edge of the National Park was idyllic if you could bear the flies, mosquitoes, snakes and centipedes.. (Ric)

*The Australian Lyre Bird is the world's best imitator; able to mimic the calls of 15 different species of birds in their locality and string the calls into a melody. Also been known to mimic the sound mobile phones.

*The echidna is such a unique animal that it is classified in a special class of mammals known asmonotremes, which it shares only with the platypus. The echidna lays eggs like a duck but suckles its young in a pouch like a kangaroo. For no apparent reason, it may decide to conserve energy by dropping its body temperature to 4 degrees and remain at that temperature from 4 to 120 days. Lab experiments have shown that the echidna is more intelligent that a cat and it has been seen using its spikes, feet and beaks to climb up crevices like a mountaineer edging up a rock chimney.

*Purple wallaby - The Purple-neck Rock Wallaby [Petrogale Purpureicollis], inhabits the Mt Isa region in Northwest Queensland. The Wallaby secretes a dye that transforms its face and neck into colours ranging from light pink to bright purple.

*The Fierce Snake or Inland Taipan has the most toxic venom of any snake. Maximum yield recorded (for one bite) is 110mg. That would probably be enough to kill over 100 people or 250,000 mice.

*The Wombat deposits square poos on logs, rocks and even upright sticks that it uses tomark its territory.

*A 10kg Tasmanian Devil is able to exert the same biting pressure as a 40kg dog. It can also eat almost a third of its body weight in a single feeding.

*Australia is the smallest, flattest, and driest inhabited continent in the world. It is the only country which is also a whole continent.

*Over 90% of Australia is dry, flat and arid. Almost three-quarters of the land cannot support agriculture in any form.

*A baby kangaroo at the time of its birth measures 2 centimetres.

birth of joey http://zzz262.multiply.com/video/item/1831

*Kangaroos need very little water to survive and are capable of going for months without drinking at all. When they do need water, they dig 'wells' for themselves; frequently going as deep as three or four feet. These 'kangaroo pits' are a common source of water for other animals living in the kangaroo's environment.

Kangaroo attacks dog, man. ^

*A kangaroo being chased by a dog may jump into a dam. If the dog gives chase, the kangaroo may turn towards the dog, then use its paws to push the dogs head underwater in order to drown it.

*Emus and kangaroos cannot walk backwards, and are on the Australian coat of arms for that reason.

*A monotreme is a animal that lays eggs and suckles its young. The world's only monotremes are the platypus and the echidna.

*The male platypus has a poisonous spine that can kill a dog and inflict immense pain on a human.

*When a specimen of the platypus was first sent to England, it was believed the Australians had played a joke by sewing the bill of a duck onto a rat.

*Box Jelly fish - The box jellyfish is considered the world's most venomous marine creature. The box jellyfish has killed more people in Australia than stonefish, sharks and crocodiles combined.

*The Sydney Funnelweb spider is considered the world's most deadly spider. It is the only spider that has killed people in less than 2 hours. Its fangs are powerful enough to bite through gloves and fingernails. The only animals without immunity to the funnelweb's venom are humans and monkeys.

*Lung fish - Queensland is home to lung fish, a living fossil from the Triassic period 350 million years ago.

Convicts

*It is estimated that by the time transportation ended in 1868, 40 per cent of Australia's English-speaking population were convicts.
*A census taken in 1828 found that half the population of NSW were Convicts, and that former Convicts made up nearly half of the free population.

*In 2007, it was estimated that 22 per cent of living Australians had a convict ancestor.

*Convicts were not sent to Australia for serious crimes. Serious crimes, such as murder, rape, or impersonating an Egyptian were given the death sentence in England.

*Crimes punishable by transportation included recommending that politicians get paid, starting a union, stealing fish from a river or pond, embezzlement, receiving or buying stolen goods, setting fire to underwood, petty theft, or being suspected of supporting Irish terrorism.

* Alcohol- It has been reported that the first European settlers in Australia drank more alcohol per head of population than any other community in the history of mankind.

* Police force - Australia's first police force was a band of 12 of the most well behaved Convicts.

* Mass moonings - In 1832, 300 female Convicts at the Cascade Female Factory mooned the Governor of Tasmania during a chapel service. It was said that in a "rare moment of collusion with the Convict women, the ladies in the Governor's party could not control their laughter.
