Mount Kosciuszko is a mountain located in theSnowy Mountains in Kosciuszko National Park. With a height of 2,228 metres (7,310 ft) above sea level, it is the highest mountain in Australia(not including its external territories).^[1] It was named by the Polish explorer Count Paul Edmund Strzelecki in 1840, in honour of the Polish national hero General Tadeusz Kościuszko, because of its perceived resemblance to the Kościuszko Mound inKrakow.^[2]

The name of the mountain was previously spelt "Mount Kosciusko", an Anglicisation, but the spelling "Mount Kosciuszko" was officially adopted in 1997 by the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales. The traditional English pronunciation of Kosciuszko is /kɒziːˈɒskoʊ/, but the pronunciation /kɒˈʃʊʃkoʊ/ is now sometimes used.^[3] The former pronunciation differs substantially from the Polish pronunciation [kɔɕˈt​͡ɕuʂkɔ] ( listen), but the latter pronunciation is much closer to it.

Polish dance heritage has contributed significantly to Australian dance culture. From early colonial years, dances of Polish origin, such as the mazurka, were an influence on both social and stage dance. A more tangible impact came with the decision by a number of Polish dancers to remain in Australia after the Ballets Russes tours of the 1930s. Their expertise, and the subsequent founding of the Polish-Australian Ballet, influenced the development of classical ballet in this country.

Another important contribution has come through folkloric ensembles, generally established since the 1950s by Polish immigrants aiming to preserve and promote their culture. These groups have both contributed to and influenced Australian dance through their recreation of traditional Polish dance, music and cultural traditions. Some of the numerous folkloric ensembles established all around Australia in the last 50 years or so are listed below.

The earliest such folk dancing group may have been formed on the ship M S Fairsea during its voyage to Australia in 1949. Early ensembles to be formally established include Krakowiacy in Melbourne in 1950, Krakowiak in Geelong, Victoria, and Oberek, in Hobart, Tasmania, both founded in 1952

I was born in '32 and i was about 24 so that would be in 1956, when was in Townsville. I had been working in nearby sugar mills and tried cane-cutting, but I had this urge to get into journalism. I didn’t know how, but decided to try at the Mercury office. I wrote a short article about radio markers the air force was dropping in the sea stating that it was a waste of money. That was the theme. I took this article to a journalist at the newspaper stating that I would like a job. I did not actually see the journalist but left it for him at the desk. He did not contact me so in a few days I managed to see him and he gave me short shrift.

I was very despondent and having heard about the terrible conditions of Aborigines and Islanders on nearby Palm Id I decided to try again. I dressed in khaki shorts long socks and tan shoes, with a crisp white shirt. This was standard uniform for public servants in North Queensland at that time.

There was a launch run I think by the native affairs department going in the morning to Palm Id. It was restricted to government personnel and police generally. I went aboard at the right time and a man approached me who appeared to be in authority. I later found out it was Bartlam the superintendent of Palm Island which was a detention centre for aborigines.. This man asked me “Are you official?”

“That’s right.” I replied. He went back to his seat and it appeared he was with his daughter, a rather arrogant looking girl.. The trip did not take I think more than an hour.

Reaching there I did not go to the administration building but slipped along a lane towards the beach. I saw a group of Aboriginal people and said “I’m a journalist.. Is there anything you want to say about conditions here? “ They were eager to talk and I found out a lot of shocking information.

There was one man I remember. He said his name was Harold Blair the same name as his nephew the famous Aboriginal opera singer.

I told them where to contact me, but I was told that the mail was censored.

Just then a couple of native police ran up and told the others to go away and they lead me to the administration building. Here Bartlam stormed at me that that I was trespassing and that I had I had given him false information.

I said I was doing an article for the Townsville Mercury. He said I would be returned on the afternoon launch to Townsville. I was placed in a bare room with a native guard. Later I was escorted to the launch. Some brave natives called goodbye to me from the beach and I saw they were dispersed by native police.

Arriving at the Townsville wharf I was taken into custody by the Queensland (white) police who asked me harshly who I was, etc. There was a phone conversation between them and the Mercury office, who must have told them I was known but I was not in their employ. I had my notes taken and was made to strip and was searched. I was then told I would not be charged with various offences “If you bugger off back to Sydney. “ We’ll give you 24 hours mate! If yer still here then, well, it’s Bogga Road for yer.”

Though I wasn’t roughed up, due probably to that they were a bit uneasy about giving “ Queensland Justice” to a journalist., I took them seriously. Once out of custody I immediately went to the room I was renting on Castle Hill and found it ransacked and my old portable missing, as well as a novel I had roughed out.

This novel I’m sure had little potential merit , but it did contain some romance between the hero and a native girl and having sex with a native or islander in Queensland at that time was an offense punishable by gaol. Even advocating relations between the races was an offense in that state..

I wondered where I could get the use of a typewriter and though I was not a communist I went to the headquarters of the Communist party of Australia, North Queensland Branch. A couple of people talked to me. They were very suspicious, because they had been harassed a lot by authorities. I told them I just wanted to write the story while it was fresh in my mind and they agreed. I think I mentioned Harry Reed an artist in Sydney, who was a known C.P. member and later went to Cuba under Castro. I also said my mother had been invited to attend the Moscow Institute when she was 17 and she was a friend of Agnes Witcher, a member of renown. I also trotted out the names of several of my relations on the O’Keefe side who had been parliamentarians for Labour. I remember that a woman who was sympathetic had an eye missing . I wrote an article and titled it "Prison Camp in Australia.” When they read it they were so pleased they wanted it to go in the communist paper, “ The Tribune”. I demurred, saying I was going to try for the Brisbane “Sunday Truth.”

I was at Townsville station to get the Brisbane train and sure enough a couple of cops were there to see me go. One told me “and don’t fucking- well come back, you commo bastard.” Luckily they did not search me so the article was safe.

First thing in Brisbane I went to the Truth office and my reception was much easier. They accepted the article. I waived payment and by-line just to get it in.

I then decided to leave Queensland and took the train to slightly more liberal N.S.W.

I was in Sydney when I saw the front page article “Prison Camp in Australia.”

I couldn’t tell my friends it was my article because it was under a journalist’s name. That didn’t matter .I had a lot of satisfaction. I hoped that Bartlam squirmed. I heard he was replaced.

About a year later I got the reward that has stayed in my mind. A letter came from the elder Harold Blair thanking me on behalf of the people on Palm Island. He stated that conditions had got a bit better and the mail was no longer censored. For years I treasured that letter. To my mind, my grandmother’s spirit had made me do it.

Palm Island officer not guilty

Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley. A Queensland police officer charged after a Palm Island man died in his custody has been found not guilty of manslaughter and not guilty of assault.

A Townsville Supreme Court jury handed down its verdict today. The jury of eight women and four men took just over three hours to deliver its not guilty verdict on both charges.

Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley pleaded not guilty to one count each of manslaughter and assault over Mulrunji Doomadgee's death at the Palm Island watchhouse on November 19, 2004.

The death triggered riots on the island.

Last week, the trial heard Mr Doomadgee had died of internal bleeding after his liver was cleaved in two across his spine and his portal vein burst.

The injuries resulted from the application of what was described to the court as moderate to massive force.

Earlier today, in closing instructions, Justice Peter Dutney urged the 12-member jury to weigh the case against Hurley on its own merits and to dismiss all feelings of prejudice and sympathy.

"This trial is not concerned with the police. It is not concerned with any riots that took place," he said. "It is not concerned with any other indigenous issue or death in custody.''

The judge told the jury they must decide whether that force "was intentional or unintentional'' by Hurley.

Medical experts testified that the injuries could have occurred as a result of Hurley falling on top of Mr Doomadgee with his knee protruding as they tripped through the doorway of the watchhouse. Alternatively, the court was told the officer could have intentionally performed a "knee-drop" immediately after the incident. Justice Dutney said the jury must decide whether or not the injuries had occurred before or after the fall, and whether or not Hurley had lied in his accounts of the incident.

Hurley initially told investigating police he fell beside Mr Doomadgee.

But in testimony to the court last week the policeman conceded he "must have" landed on top of Mr Doomadgee. Justice Dutney said if the jury decided Hurley intentionally injured Mr Doomadgee they needed to decide whether "a reasonable person" would have considered his actions could result in the 36-year-old Aboriginal man's death.

SUVs and Hummers, Toyota got on the green bandwagon early with hybrids and other fuel-efficient cars, and is now reaping the rewards as gas prices soar. Meanwhile, Wall Street faces rivals in cities such as London, which is attracting so many international banks and companies to its booming stock and capital markets that it now claims to be the new center for global business and finance -- a title disputed, of course, by New York City boosters.

Still, argues Michael Charlton, the chief executive of Think London, the city's official foreign-direct-investment agency, "It is a valid claim that London is the world financial capital because its status is based on its international credentials and because we trade so successfully internationally." Is London the next global capital?

Even New York's pre-eminent position as the center of the booming global art market is being challenged -- again by London, a city that once shunned contemporary art. Nowadays, London's galleries and auction houses are crowded with new collectors, including many newly rich Russians, clamoring for the work of blue-chip artists.

The reality is a bit more complex, but we do now live in a multipolar world, and we had better get used to it. Forget the superpower rivalry between the U.S. and the former Soviet Union, as well as the brief time in which the U.S. was the only superpower. Forget the time when there was no Airbus, only Boeing and Lockheed and McDonnell Douglas.

Today the centers of power, finance and trade have realigned into three heavyweight blocks: the U.S., the European Union and Asia, with the last dominated by China and India, boasting massive populations and rapidly developing economies. Each group is looking out for its own interests and using its might to influence economic policy and world affairs.

So where does that leave the U.S.?

Rediker, of the New America Foundation, says the U.S. is still a major player in the global economy and isn't likely to become a second-tier nation anytime soon. But, he adds, it's time to recognize that "it's also not the only player, and as such, can't dictate terms to the

In the short term, that shift in thinking might not cut prices at the pump or in grocery stores, or restore strength in the dollar. But it could become part of a wider strategy on how the U.S. can deal with the world's evolving economic structure and encourage business leaders to adopt a broader, bolder outlook to remain competitive in the global marketplace.

Despite the challenges and gloomy outlook fostered by the credit crunch and subprime mortgage mess, many believe the U.S. economy remains both formidable and resilient, with deep reserves of talent, entrepreneurship and continuing investment in research and development.

Even General Motors is trying to change: It has vowed to design an electric car and have it on the road by 2010.

"We should not underestimate the ability of the U.S. economy to transform itself," says Mauro Guillen, a professor of international management at The Wharton School in Philadelphia. "It has one of the most flexible economies and continues to be a magnet for the best and the brightest." Although the nation is at a crossroads in many respects, Guillen adds, "The U.S. will weather the storm."

Despite spending $230m (£115m) an hour on healthcare, Americans live shorter lives than citizens of almost every other developed country. And while it has the second-highest income per head in the world, the United States ranks 42nd in terms of life expectancy.

These are some of the startling conclusions from a major new report which attempts to explain why the world's number-one economy has slipped to 12th place - from 2nd in 1990- in terms of human development.

The American Human Development Report, which applies rankings of health, education and income to the US, paints a surprising picture of a country that spends well over $5bn each day on healthcare - more per person than any other country.

The report, Measure of America, was funded by Oxfam America, the Conrad Hilton Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation. It shows each of the 11 countries that rank higher than the US in human development has a lower per-capita income.

Those countries score better on the health and knowledge indices that make up the overall human development index (HDI), which is calculated each year by the United Nations Development Programme.

And each has achieved better outcomes in areas such as infant mortality and longevity, with less spending per head.

Japanese, for example, can expect to outlive Americans, on average, by more than four years. In fact, citizens of Israel, Greece, Singapore, Costa Rica, South Korea and every western European and Nordic country save one can expect to live longer than Americans.

There are also wider differences, the report shows. The average Asian woman, for example, lives for almost 89 years, while African-American women live until 76. For men of the same groups, the difference is 14 years.

One of the main problems faced by the US, says the report, is that one in six Americans, or about 47 million people, are not covered by health insurance and so have limited access to healthcare.

As a result, the US is ranked 42nd in global life expectancy and 34th in terms of infants surviving to age one. The US infant mortality rate is on a par with that of Croatia, Cuba, Estonia and Poland. If the US could match top-ranked Sweden, about 20,000 more American babies a year would live to their first birthday.

"Human development is concerned with what I take to be the basic development idea: namely, advancing the richness of human life, rather than the richness of the economy in which human beings live, which is only a part of it," said the Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen, who developed the HDI in 1990.

"We get in this report ... an evaluation of what the limitations of human development are in the US but also ... how the relative place of America has been slipping in comparison with other countries over recent years."

The US has a higher percentage of children living in poverty than any of the world's richest countries.

In fact, the report shows that 15% of American children - 10.7 million - live in families with incomes of less than $1,500 per month.

It also reveals 14% of the population - some 40 million Americans - lack the literacy skills to perform simple, everyday tasks such as understanding newspaper articles and instruction manuals.

And while in much of Europe, Canada, Japan and Russia, levels of enrolment of three and four-year-olds in pre-school are running at about 75%, in the US it is little more than 50%.

The report not only highlights the differences between the US and other countries, it also picks up on the huge discrepancies between states, the country's 436 congressional districts and between ethnic groups.

"The Measure of America reveals huge gaps among some groups in our country to access opportunity and reach their potential," said the report's co-author, Sarah Burd-Sharps. "Some Americans are living anywhere from 30 to 50 years behind others when it comes to issues we all care about: health, education and standard of living.

"For example, the state human development index shows that people in last-ranked Mississippi are living 30 years behind those in first-ranked Connecticut."

Inequality remains stark. The richest fifth of Americans earn on average $168,170 a year, almost 15 times the average of the lowest fifth, who make do with $11,352.

The US is far behind many other countries in the support given to working families, particularly in terms of family leave, sick leave and childcare. The country has no federally mandated maternity leave.

The US also ranks first among the 30 rich countries of the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development in terms of the number of people in prison, both in absolute terms and as a percentage of the total population.

It has 5% of the world's people but 24% of its prisoners.

There are millions of citizens in Democratic Republics who wonder why Britain still has such anachronisms as the House of Lords and the Royal Family. Well the house of Lords is a great place for all these old codgers and Dames of the order of this or that and Lords and Earls and a Marquis or two to get together like one big club. They do bit of pondering about questions whether there should be a partial lifting of the ban on fox-hunting, whether taxes should go up or down, how much to charge the public to explore part of their castles and estates and a place to sleep off the excesses of scotch whisky after luncheon. The Royal Family would be well worth keeping even just because of its comedy value. It is like a continuing serial of higher Upstairs, Downstairs with a touch of Dallas and a pinch of the Sopranos. After all, it only costs the British Public about 300,000,000 pounds a year, which is about five quid each person in the United Kingdom. It brings in that much from tourism for sure....and best of all it makes Americans envious, because even though they love their Republic, most of them would like their own Royal Family too. Well, if the United States ever made a serious offer to take over the Royal Family and maybe buy Kensington Palace and ship it brick by brick to some place like Daytona Beach,Florida, for them to live in, then I am sure the offer would be seriously considered by the British people. ********************************************************* Cancer. It was sad to read in the Guardian Unlimited this morning 30/10/2007, that a popular Guardian writer Dina Rabinovich died yesterday from breast cancer. One wonders at the causes that can down a 44 year old women of great intellectual strength and popularity. It does not mention if she smoked. I have observed that there appears to be many cancers occurring in people, who have deadlines to meet and have many things to do. That is to say, they cannot just switch off and relax for a few days, when they want. Telephones and more particularly cell-phones and email, keep one constantly attached to the job. This can build up tension and affect sleep and your health. I read that everyone has cancer, (adults over a certain age anyway) and that almost all of these small cancers are killed by the body's defenses. Perhaps stress and lack of sleep are factors in cancers getting out of control. There are, of course, other factors such as too- tight bras, whether the breasts are used sufficiently for their natural function by babies, smoking, drinking alcohol and the environment lived in. Then again it might be genetic tendency or just plain bad luck, (the factor there is no pill for.) When I was seventeen and contemplating journalism as a career, I had to start at the bottom, employed on Consolidated press Sydney as a copy boy. My important duties was taking copy around the various departments and running other messages. I did this willingly, though the pay was minimal, as there was a probability of a cadetship coming up. What made me change my mind was the polluted air throughout the building, coming mostly from almost every worker from the editor down. Everyone seemed to smoke incessantly and I found I was allergic to tobacco smoke. I gave up my dream of being a journalist and as a result I am cancer-free (touch wood) at seventy five. Really i can't be sure of this but i am not going to a doctor to be examined. Surely he will find a lot of things wrong with me that I do not know I have....and don't want to know. (Ric)

I had vaguely known about it, but the news this morning (29/10/07) that Canada is one of the top armament suppliers in the world was a depressing shock to me. On the one hand we have the media and politicians talking forever about "peace" and Canada's role as a "peacekeeper" in the trouble spots in the world and then the dirty secret that big business and the government is profiting largely from war. It should be no surprise really. Big Business and the media have been pushing the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and Canada's participation in both wars. Yes, even in Iraq Canada gives much military and naval and communications support to the U.S. forces. After all the two countries' military machines are integrated. The Canadian government for the last four years, despite the law, has not made public any information about who Canadian industry supplies for military hardware and supplies. As for supplies to the U.S.A., Canada is not obliged to make that public knowledge ever (and it doesn't.)

I overheard Bluey (he was red-haired) Stapleton giving a tip for the Saturday races at Randwick. I ran home and then saw a schoolfriend who knew how to put on a starting price (illegal) bet at the local fruiterers who was a S.P. bookie on the side. Both of us went to the bookie and I placed a bet to win (because Bluey had said it was a sure thing) on the particular horse. I did not tell my dad, who was an avid punter, regularly losing his bets, though he had a "system" that according to him was going to start a winning streak pretty soon. Next Saturday afternoon, I hung around the radio which dad was listening to in the lounge-room, though the place was generally very smoky from full strength Capstan cigarettes. Of course I knew my horse would win and it did at twenty to one and for a few weeks I had lots of pocket money. So since I won once, naturally I could do it again with the infallable tips from my tipster. On my next errand to the butcher, I asked him point blank for a tip and I got one, a sure thing. Since it was a winner and I wanted to increase my profit (I had a ten- speed bike in mind) I increased my bet. Still, I was cautious and kept most of the winnings from the week before. You know the end of the story. The horse came next to last. Suitably impressed and subdued, I vowed I would never bet again in my life, and I have not, so all in all I am ahead from gambling, and never got the bug for slot machines or on-line gaming, Las Vegas or even an office sweep. I have been pleasantly surprised recently to experience winning lotteries and diverse prizes in different parts of the world and not even having to buy a ticket. Kind, unknown people have been buying tickets for me apparently and I seem to be extraordinarily lucky. I believe I have won the National Uganda Lottery three times already, and I got second prize in the Irish Sweepstakes. There have been sundry others also. The only problem seems to be the devilish export taxes on these vast sums of money. It seems I must send just a thousand of two so the money may be transferred. I brought up this great opportunity in conferring at the breakfast table with my son. He barely considered it. (For some strange reason the courts have given him some sort of legal right over my my spending.) All he said was "You silly old fool. Go on like that and I'll have you in a nursing home next month!" Having read "Over the Cuckoo's Nest" again recently, I have been silent about the money ever since....after all, at my age what could I do with a million dollars or two?

Even though my relatives don't give a fig about me (I was pretty bad in my life) I still have some communication with the animals, who just think I am a nice guy. Dogs wave their tails and come over for a pat and even cats pause to look at me, wondering who is this stupid human trying to meow. Yes life is precious. I found that out in 1982 when my motorbike hit a car and in Brisbane Hospital. It was touch and go....On my recovery every day has been a bonus. I saw some years ago, a Japanese film about how they took their old parent up a sacred mountain, gave food and water for a few days and left the old person to die, when they became a burden. That was long ago, I presume. It was a gripping movie. I was talking to a worker in a nursing home yesterday. (She does the clothes washing only) She related how "nurses" and attendants tie patients to chairs by the wrists and how the old people are force- fed medications. This is Canada 2007!( see news results about nursing homes in Victoria B.C. this week.) Maybe the Japanese way was more humane. (Ric)

Finally, on 8 July 1885 Edmund O'Keefe and John Rice were arrested and charged with having feloniously assaulted and robbed Mr. Cecil Stackhouse of two keys. The trial commenced in Launceston on 27 August with the two prisoners, Barrett and Ward, having been persuaded to give evidence in return for a reduction in the length of their prison sentences. According to them the robbery had been planned with the two Collins, John Ritchie Snr and O'Keefe. They robbed the bank. O'Keefe and Rice had guarded Stackhouse. Collins's part was to get rid of the bank notes through his business. Rice had little to do with the affair. John Ritchie's part had been to let them know which night Stackhouse would be visiting him.

You may also telephone the government department, but there may be anywhere up to an hour waiting. If you have not already had an accident, then you may consult the map online, take a taxi or walk hurriedly to the designated spot and you will find relief (if it is not already in use.) It is advisable to take a supply of toilet paper with you. It has been suggested that the government should also have an internet map available for your area, so you would be able to find out where the nearest internet access is. For the computer illiterate it is suggested that you ask a passer-by "Where's the nearest dunny, mate?"Yes. We gotta go. who's got the map?

The great majority of citizens want British troops OUT of Afghanistan while British leaders, Labour or Conservative want them IN. The whole thing is disgusting. Gordon Brown should be sewn up in a haggis and thrown into Loch Ness as a Christmas gift for Nessy. A nineteenth century wit once said: "Democracy is useful, because it gives the masses the necessary illusion that they have some say in running the country." William Pickton's lawyer take note: His defense should have been that he was only following the same procedures as in Iraq. "The forty women he is alleged to have killed were all alleged prostitues and druggies." Don't mind me. I've just got stuck in hyperspace and I can't seem to get out again. I was trying a program to change human body cells into digital machine language and suddenly I found myself in computer data. I can still think but i have no feeling except for anxiety. Come on hackers. How do I get out again?

Both of us went to the bookie and I placed a bet to win (because Bluey had said it was a sure thing) on the particular horse. I did not tell my dad, who was an avid punter, regularly losing his bets, though he had a "system" that according to him was going to start a winning streak pretty soon. Next Saturday afternoon, I hung around the radio which dad was listening to in the lounge-room, though the place was generally very smoky from full strength Capstan cigarettes. Of course I knew my horse would win and it did at twenty to one and for a few weeks I had lots of pocket money. So since I won once, naturally I could do it again with the infallable tips from my tipster. On my next errand to the butcher, I asked him point blank for a tip and I got one, a sure thing. Since it was a winner and I wanted to increase my profit (I had a ten- speed bike in mind) I increased my bet. Still, I was cautious and kept most of the winnings from the week before. You know the end of the story. The horse came next to last. Suitably impressed and subdued, I vowed I would never bet again in my life, and I have not, so all in all I am ahead from gambling, and never got the bug for slot machines or on-line gaming, Las Vegas or even an office sweep. I have been pleasantly surprised recently to experience winning lotteries and diverse prizes in different parts of the world and not even having to buy a ticket. Kind, unknown people have been buying tickets for me apparently and I seem to be extraordinarily lucky. I believe I have won the National Uganda Lottery three times already, and I got second prize in the Irish Sweepstakes. There have been sundry others also. The only problem seems to be the devilish export taxes on these vast sums of money. It seems I must send just a thousand of two so the money may be transferred. I brought up this great opportunity in conferring at the breakfast table with my son. He barely considered it. (For some strange reason the courts have given him some sort of legal right over my my spending.) All he said was "You silly old fool. Go on like that and I'll have you in a nursing home next month!" Having read "Over the Cuckoo's Nest" again recently, I have been silent about the money ever since....after all, at my age what could I do with a million dollars or two?

I recall of the Intermediate High School the faces of the teachers but not the names. I recall we had a student's strike there once because Wednesday afternoon sports was suspended and it got in the papers to the embarrassment of our Principal, Mr Hunt.. sports was on again the next Wednesday. I recall the visit of Clive Evatt, Minister of Education. He was the younger brother of Dr Evatt, Minister of Foreign Affairs in the federal government and later Australia's delegate to The U.N. That is stretching it a bit in my case, but while I can walk around and bathe myself and drive the car (why does everyone else have to drive so fast?) I want to stay in touch with living humanity and even with the crows who seem to be in control of the avian kingdom here in Vancouver and the squirrel which raids my trashcan and the coyotes who run through the area nightly looking for small dogs and cats,(there are notices on poles "Have you seen a white Persian pussy, answers to Kittykat, last seen Tuesday night. We miss you Kittykat?") and the racoon with her three young ones, scratching my door at night for handouts. Even though my relatives don't give a fig about me (I was pretty bad in my life) I still have some communication with the animals, who just think I am a nice guy. Dogs wave their tails and come over for a pat and even cats pause to look at me, wondering who is this stupid human trying to meow. Yes life is precious. I found that out in 1982 when my motorbike hit a car and in Brisbane Hospital. It was touch and go....On my recovery every day has been a bonus. I saw some years ago, a Japanese film about how they took their old parent up a sacred mountain, gave food and water for a few days and left the old person to die, when they became a burden. That was long ago, I presume. It was a gripping movie. I was talking to a worker in a nursing home yesterday. (She does the clothes washing only) She related how "nurses" and attendants tie patients to chairs by the wrists and how the old people are force- fed medications. This is Canada 2007!( see news results about nursing homes in Victoria B.C. this week.) Maybe the Japanese way was more humane. (Ric)
