Mary Ann Theresa Summerell was 16 years of age at the time of marriage to John Williams. He was 66 years of age!
Rumour has it that Mary Ann Theresa's father would not let John marry Mary Ann unless he gave him 30 head of sheep.
It has only come up in recent time that Mary Ann had a child before she married John - the father is not named on the certificate,
but the child was a girl "Mary Ann Summerell" who was born on 25 Dec, 1900 an died some hours later"

Robert Williams
Curry Flat 1845
Robert Williams was born in 1815 at Castlereagh NSW to John Williams and Sarah Nash, almost certainly at his grandmother's
farm near the Nepean River. In 1823 the Williams family moved to West Bargo where Robert remained for around five years. In
1828 or thereabouts Robert returned to the Castlereagh district to assist his uncle George Nash and grandmother Maria Nash with
their farms, and to secure his inheritance. He remained there for nearly two decades.
In 1835 Robert married currency-lass Susannah Tindall (1817-1901), the daughter of convict Daniel Tindall (Duke of Portland
1807) and his wife Jane (per Kangaroo 1814). Robert and Susannah remained at Castlereagh until Maria Nash's death in 1844,
moving to the Monaro district shortly afterwards. Robert sold his grandmother's farm to the neighbouring Single family in 1863.
Upon their arrival in the Monaro district Robert and his family settled initially at the Williams' “Curry Flat” run near Nimmitabel,
before Robert found employment on other runs in the Monaro district. These included William Bradley's "Dangelong" where he
was working as a shepherd in 1854 and as a carrier in 1856. By the late 1850’s Robert and his family were squatting at
“Numeralla”, probably sub-leasing grazing land from another leaseholder.
Robert and his family left the Monaro district in 1863 and moved to Tantawanglo parish near Bega where Robert “selected” and
resided upon different portions of land over the following decade.
This is a brief summary of the chapter relating to these members of the Williams Family in Carol Baxters's 'The First Fleet Nash
Family: A Biographical History'. This chapter will comprise many pages of detailed biographical information in the future publication.
Go to Carol Baxters page for more information on Robert Williams and Susannah Tindall.

John was sentenced to 14 years for desertion from his regiment and arrived on the Duke of Portland in 1808. He received a grant
of land of 50 acres at West Bargo in 1822-23. By 1839 he had 10,240 acres at Nimitabel. Sarah was born in 1798 in the
Hawkesbury, the daughter of William Nash and Maria Haynes. (First Fleeters perhaps?)
Williamsdale was named after John Williams. His son John named his Nimitabel property 'Brecknock" after his fathers birthplace.
John Williams died in the snow returning to his home at Grosses Plain
John married2 (1) Mary Anne Shannon daughter of Israel Laurence Lewis Shannon and Sarah Tucker on 6 Apr 1858 in Christ Church, Cooma. Mary was born3 on 10 Jul 1843 in Cumberland. She was christened on 20 Aug 1843 in St. James, Sydney. She died4 on 11 Nov 1887 in Bega. She was buried on 13 Nov 1887 in Kameruka.

On 6th November, 1847 "an ecclesiastical board" of the Sydney Synagogue consisting of Moses Rintel, Jacon Isaacs and Moses
Moses was formed 'to report on the case of Mr. & Mrs. Shannon, but no decsion was made and the report was sent to the Chief
Rabbi'. Israel Shannon, a convict transported about 1833-34 married a Christian woman to whom he had been assigned, and
wished to have his wife converted to Judaism and his five children legitimised in Jewish Law. Since Laurence meets all these
criteria, and no other convict named Shannon was transported about that time, I believe Israel and Laurence are the same person.
"
(JR- Note Esther Cronin nee Shannon is registered at her death with father Israel L and mother Sarah 3169/1932 CRONIN

"The report to the board was received by the synagogue committee on 21st November 1847. Abraham Moses moved the reception
of the report and the referral of the case to Rev. Rd. N.M Adler, the chief Rabbi in London. The letter was finally sent on 28th
January, 1848. Dr. Adler's reply was apparently unfavourable, for Israel Shannon wrote to the committee asking for a local
decision. However the committee resolved that it did not have 'the power to form or appoint a beth Din without the sanction of
the chief rabbi, Dr. Adler. The late baptism of child 5 suggests that the family decided not to be Jewish in 1853.
The most likely year of his move from Sydney to Cooma is 1858, based on the places and years of his children's births and
marriages. In 1869 he owned freehold property in Cooma/ Laurence Shannon died in Cooma in 1893. His parents were named as "
Lawrence" and "Fanny" on the death certificate. His relationship to Samuel Shannon is unproven (JR note Cooma Express Friday 8
December 1893 p2 Mr. Lewis Shannon, sen. who died on Monday last took place on Tuesday...The remains were interred in a
private piece of land near the Wren's nest and alongside his brother.) but he coincidences of religeon, birthplace, Cooma residence,
his daughter Mary Anne being a Witness to Samuel's daughter Rebecca's 1860 marriage and the naming of Laurence's son Samuel
are suggestive. Almost certainly he was Samuels's brother. Samuel's father was Jacob. his mother was not named.

Elijah Farmer. I am a plumber and glazier - I lodge in Baker’s row, Mile-end road; I have been there four or five years. The
prisoner came there about eight days before this happened - I believe he is a slipper-maker; I went out between five and six
o’clock in the morning, on the 13th of April - I left the prisoner there; he slept in the same room - my box was near the bed; it was
locked - when I came home the hinges were nearly off, and I missed the articles stated out of it; the prisoner was gone - I did
not see him again until the 26th, when he was in custody in Worship street; I have not found any of my property - he has given
no notice of leaving; I expected him to come home in the evening.
MARY COBB. I am mistress of the house - prosecutor has been with me for years. The prisoner came there on the 1st of April, to
lodge by the week - on the 13th he left without notice; about half past seven o’clock after the prosecutor was gone, I heard him
come down and shut the door - he never returned; he took away his night cap and his property - the prosecutor complained of
losing his property ; I went the same evening to where the prisoner had told me I might have his address, No. 38 Great Garden
street - as I went up the steps I saw him at the window; I went into the passage - the room door was locked; I saw a young
woman, who made a sort of stammer - I said I wanted to see the prisoner, and it was no use denying it, for I had seen him; she
then went into the back room, and said ‘You had better come forward, she has seen you;” he then came forward, and I accused
him of it - he denied it; I said, “The young man is at the corner of the street, and you had better go with me to him;” he went
with me part of the way, and then ran away - my brother , who was with me, ran after him, but did not like to follow him further;
we afterwards heard he was at No. 21, Baker’s row - we sent for him; he was denied, but the officer got him.
Prisoner. You said you would give charge of me.
Witness. Yes, I did, and I would if I could have got an officer.
Prisoner’s defence. I did not run - the prosecutor’s room door was wide open, and there was free access for any of the lodgers ; I
had not time to return to my lodgings - she came the same afternoon; I never did such a thing - I was at my father’s house, and
my sister told me she had come; she did not say she had seen me.

The funeral of Mr. Lewis Shannon, sen. who died on Monday last took place on Tuesday, when a goodly number of relatives and
friends followed the remains to the grave. The remains were interred in a private piece of land near the Wren's nest and alongside

The deceased was highly respected and was 83 years of age at the time of his death and had been a resident of Cooma for very
many years, and leaves behind him a wife, three sons, several daughters, and grandchildren, and other relatives to mourn their
loss. Mr. C. Solomon read the burial service at the grave.

Robert Williams (2nd) and Mary Ann Martin
Robert Williams (2nd) was born on 23/5/1860 at Numerella near Cooma. In 1870 his father (John 2nd) took up land in the Bega/
Tantawangalo/ Mogilla district, 380 acres in all.
The land is said to have been in the name of his two sons, Robert (2nd) & Charles (father of Monty Williams who in 1988 was
living at 4 May St. Goulburn at age 87). This was about the last of the "land selections" as little vacant land of any value remained
beyond this date.
(Click photos for full view)
Times were hard on the land and by the time Robert & Charles reached manhood it was particularly so for those on small areas.
However, the Bega district with an average rainfall of over 30" made the small holdings a little more attractive than elsewhere.
The 1890's
The depression of the 1890's resulted in widespread hardship, bank closures etc. By this time Robert & Charles had cleared the
land which was near Tantawangale/Mogilla and they decided to lease it and go outback looking for any available work they could
find.
They tried tank sinking (building farm dams) and such like on properties along the Lachlan & Barwon rivers. Then they tried
shearing for a couple of years. Here is a photo of one of the camp sites when they were sinking tanks. Robert Williams is the
bearded one sitting on the log.

Outback N.S.W. in the area surrounding the Cobar, Nymagee, Shuttleton & Gilgunnia districts around the turn of the century.
Charles then decided to return to the Bega district. Apparently there was a girl there he was interested in. Robert stayed in the
west and went on to have a varied career. There are some suggestions that at one time he managed a station in Queensland. This
may not be accurate. I never heard my father ever mention anything about his father's adventures in Queensland. However, he
did work outback for a road contractor with gangs of men, horses and drays etc.
Marriage
On the first of May 1886 Robert Williams married Mary Ann Martin at the Catholic Church in Bourke. They met while Robert was
working in the Bourke/Louth areas. Mary Martin's parents were involved with a Louth hotel (there were five hotels in Louth during
that time) and Mary worked there for a time. In the meantime Robert had sold his share of the Bega land to his brother Charles.
Children of the Marriage
They spent much of their time in the Louth, Cobar, Nymagee, Shuttleton & Gilgunnia areas. These places, apart from Cobar,
hardly exist today. Then, they were thriving towns. Here is a photo of
They had eight children, three boys and three girls. Their names were:-
Robert (3rd), born Bourke - 1887
Francis. E, born Bourke - 1888
Maud. M. A, born Bourke - 1891
Ellen. E. (Nellie), born Bourke - 1892
Edith. A. (Edie), born Cobar - 1894
Oswald. Arthur (Arthur) Our ancestor, born Gilgunnia -1896
Ivy I, born Hillston -1899
Lindsay Lee, (Lee), born Cobar - 1901
Outcome of the Marriage
Mary Ann was deaf for most of her life. She never did hear her husband's voice. Folks who could, spoke to her by using their
hands.
Robert (2nd) & Mary Ann separated after the children had grown up. She moved to Hurlstone Park and he remained out west. He
died in Parkes and is supposed to be buried in the Parkes cemetery.

It appears as though Robert probably owned this station "Wongawood" which comprises 26,000 acres and is situated on the left/
hand side of the Kidman Way approximately 40 kms north of Mt. Hope when heading for Cobar.
In the early 1930's the property was sold by Bob Williams (the eldest son of Robert Williams who subsequently married Annie
McLennan) to the Charles William Nicholson and it remained in the Nicholson family for more than fifty years. The present owner
(2004) is John Fitzgerald.

'Boloco', Dalgety.
Rueben Uther Bartlett Rose was born on the 3rd September 1834 at Cambelltown NSW, the home of his parents Thomas Rose
1773-1837 and Sarah Pye 1801-1869. He married Eliza Jane Merrett in 1863 at Campbelltown (Eliza was born at Campbelltown on
21st July 1837). Reuben came to the Monaro in 1873 when he selected land at Boloco Creek, he later purchased Boloco Station.
I haven't been able to find a lot of information about my great grandfather, his obituary which follows is entertaining but not very
informative.
Obituary R U B Rose - Monaro Express. - 11.09.1905
"On Sunday afternoon the respected laird of Boloco Station (Mr. R U B Rose) passed away to his eternal home, full of years and
honour. For about a week Mr. Rose had been in a delicate state of health and little hope had been entertained of his recovery. The
deceased gentleman had been suffering bronchitis and tonsillitis which brought him down to a low condition of health and his
death resulted as the consequence from heart failure. Deceased had been attended by Dr Henderson, of Adaminaby, continuously
during his illness and though all this medical skill and careful nursing could do was done it was without avail. Mr. Rose had spent a
long and eventful life on Monaro, he being a resident of the district for thirty five years during which time he had gained the
universal esteem and respect of the whole community. At the time of death the deceased had reached the mature age of seventy-
four years, being four years over the allotted span. The age of seventy-four allows a great deal to be accomplished and the
deceased gentleman unostentatiously crowed a deal of usefulness into the term of his existence. He seldom took any part in public
matters but he quietly took much interest in whatever concerned the welfare of the district. As a neighbour he was friendly, and to
all he was hospitable and on the whole his character was that worthy of a good father. By his demise he leaves behind to mourn
their irreparable loss a widow and a grown up family, the latter comprising Messrs. A F and H T M Rose, of Cooma; R U B Rose
junr, Boloco and Mesdames John Crisp, Ironmungie; E Crisp, Mittagang; J Williams, Camden; and Miss Amy Rose, Boloco, besides
a large circle of relatives and friends. Profound sympathy is felt throughout the district for the bereaved family and relatives.
Deceased’s mortal remains were interned in the Boloco Cemetery on Monday afternoon, the remains being followed to the
graveside by a large procession of relatives and friends thus evidencing the very great respect in which the deceased was held."
All this really tells us is that he came to the Monaro in about 1870. I assume that he took-up the Boloco Property at that time, his
daughter Eliza was born there in 1874. Hopefully cousin Ben Rose will be able to tell us more about his activities. We have detailed
genealogy, thanks to the work done by Anne Lorimer Sheppard. We know that Reuben and Eliza had the following children:
Sarah Elizabeth Jane Rose was born at Campbelltown NSW on 28th April 1864, she married John Crisp (1850-1920) at Boloco,
Dalgety on the 14th September 1886. Sarah died in Sydney on the 4th April 1937 and was buried at Boloco, Dalgety
Henry (Harry) Thomas Merrett Rose was born at Campbelltown NSW on the 14th November 1866, he married Amelia Jane Hain
(1868-1940) in 1863, I am not sure where they were married. Amelia was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Hain of Cooma.
Harry died on the 31st July 1938 and is buried at Boloco, Dalgety.
Hannah Rebecca Pye Rose was born at Campbelltown NSW on the 4th May 1869, she married Edward (Ned) Crisp (1863-1944) at
Cooma in 1902. I don't know when she died or were she is buried.
Alfred Frederick William Rose was born on the 14th September 1871 at Campbelltown NSW and he died on the 26th May 1940
Eliza Jane Rose was born at Boloco, Dalgety on the 21st July 1874, she married Joseph Lawrence Williams, she died at
Campbelltown on 24th September 1911 and is buried there at St Peter's Cemetery.
Amy May Rose was born at Boloco, Dalgety on the 8th February 1878, she married Alfred Ernest Cambell Jeanneret (1868-1944).
Amy died in Sydney on the 18th February 1955 and was buried at Boloco.
Reuben Rose was born at Boloco, Dalgety on the 6th July1881, he married Freda Margorie Wyndham. Rueben died at Boloco on
the 23rd February 1955 and is buried at St Jame's Cemetery, Boloco.

Arthur Wiliams was born on 14/7/1896 at a place called "The Four Mile", Gilgunnia. His first job was on the Cobar press at age 13
(1909) where he began to learn the printing trade. He progressed to be the compositor on the paper.
After spending a short time in Dubbo, he took a position with the "Junee Southern Cross". Conscription was then on the political
agenda during the 1st World War and Arthur was quite vocal on the subject. He approved of conscription for the defence of
Australia, but not to send young Australians to fight battles in far away countries for the British or other European nations.
He was urged by supporters to stand for Federal Parliament, but he never did. Monty Williams (of Goulburn) said Arthur was too
gentle a man to ever have been a successful politician.

they could purchase one of their own, which they did in due course. Arthur worked on the Sydney Metropolitan Press including
Smith's Weekly, The Bulletin, The Sun and the Sun Herald.
Depression Years
During the world wide depression years of the 1930's, like many others he became unemployed. With a young family of three
children, this created considerable difficulty for he and Kathleen.
For two years he walked the streets of Sydney seeking emloyment to no avail. He and Kathleen always said it was the Lang Labour
Government of NSW that saved the family home. Jack Lang, Premier, introduced what they referred to as the "Moratorium" which
had to do with the interest charged on the home loan.
He died 14/5/1952 at age 56 from heart disease. Kathleen died 9/11/1976. They are buried at Rookwood Catholic Cemetery, Sect

Letter from the Australian Government
Parliament House
Canberra A.C.T 2600
Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence and Minister for Veteran's Affairs
31/12/03
Dear Mr. Williams
On behalf of the Federal Government, I would like to congratulate you on the award of the National Service 1951-1972 Medal. It is
both a physical reminder of your service to the Nation and an enduring remembrance of the heartfelt appreciation of the
Government and your fellow Australians for that valuable service fifty years ago in 1953.
The National Service Medal 1951 - 1972 commemorates the 50th.anniversary of the introduction of post-World War 11 National
Service. Today, the two periods of post-World War 11 national service are remembered as significant and valued events in
Australia's history and development as a nation. Indeed during the twenty one year period that covered the two schemes, 187
national servicemen made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, while approximately 1500 were wounded during their service.
I would like to use this opportunity to encourage you to contact your local Federal Member or State Senator to arrange for the
formal presentation of your medal. Presentation of the medal by a representative of the Government will provide an appropriate
occasion for your family, friends, and local community to express their gratitude for the service rendered by National Servicemen.
Yours sincerely
Mal Brough MP
