Marine Private William Nash
( c 1761...........)
Back to . . .The Royal Marines
• William and Maria separated between 1798 and 1802, as Maria was living separately from William by 1802 with her two youngest children, George (5yrs) & Sarah (3yrs).
• William petitioned the court to have Maria returned to him twice, both times unsuccessful, and so he decided to leave NSW, advertising his impending departure in the NSW Gazette in 1804. William left the colony and no more information is known about the rest of his life. It is likely that he rejoined the Royal Marines on returning to England. It appears that his 2 oldest children, Mary (11yrs) and William (9yrs) stayed in NSW, probably with their mother.
• Mary Nash married Robert Hall, in 1810, aged 17. William Nash junior died in 1813 in Sydney from a snake bite. Sarah Nash married John Williams in 1814 in Sydney.
• George Nash and his mother Maria owned and farmed a property at Castlereagh from the early 1820’s for the next 25 years, when Maria died in 1844, aged 73.
• George married Mary Lees in 1826. They had 11 children born in NSW. George and Mary had 60 grandchildren, one of which was George Warrington, born in 1850 at Windsor, son of John & Esther Warrington (nee Nash). George is a GGG Grandfather of my 5 children, on their mother Nicole’s side.

History & Achievements :
- William Nash enlisted in the Royal marines as part of the 58th Plymouth Company. He served as
- part of the convict guard on board the ship " Prince Of Wales " prior to its departure from England. William and Maria sailed with the ship to Port Jackson and arrived as part of the first Fleet.
- Following his arrival in Port Jackson, William served in William Tench's company.
In March 1790, William sailed to Norfolk Island onboard the “Sirius” with Captain Hunter. After coming ashore, the ship was unfortunately baffled by the weather and ran aground on a coral reef. The ship was wrecked permanently.
• When William returned from Norfolk Island, his 3 years was officially completed. William decided to stay in the Colony, probably due to being promised a grant of land and a career with the NSW Corps. On 15 January 1792, a son, John, was born in Sydney. Many of the Marines returned to England on the “Gorgon” and “Atlanta” in 1792, but William & Maria decided to stay in the colony. William enlisted in the NSW Corps on 13 April 1792. Unfortunately, John also died as an infant, only 3 months old. William & Maria lived through the years of starvation and food rationing during the first 4 years in NSW and had also lost both of their first 2 children.
