Komodo dragon

Researchers have discovered that the bite of the world's largest lizard, the Komodo dragon, is venomous.

The carnivorous beasts are unusual because they release their prey after biting them, apparently leaving the animals to bleed to death before eating them. But many experts have claimed the victims die after being infected with bacteria that cover the lizards' serrated teeth.

Komodo dragons live on several Indonesian islands and typically grow to 3m long and weigh around 50kg. They lie in wait for prey and ambush them by charging forwards with their jaws open. The lizards can spend hours in one spot, waiting for wild boar, deer, goats and other large mammals to pass by.

Scientists at the University of Melbourne used computer models to investigate the strength of the lizards' bite and found it was weak compared with other predators, such as the Australian saltwater crocodile.

But magnetic resonance imaging scans revealed complex venom glands in the dragons' mouths that had never been documented before.

Bryan Fry, who led the team, surgically removed the glands from a terminally ill dragon in a zoo. Tests showed they contained a similar poison to that found in Gila monsters and snakes, according to a report in Proceedings of the National Academy Sciences.

The powerful venom has a devastating effect on prey, causing a sudden drop in blood pressure that sends them into shock. At the same time, the venom stops the victim's blood clotting, so it bleeds to death.

The discovery suggests many more lizards may possess snake-like venom than previously thought. Until recently, only two poisonous lizards were thought to exist, the Gila monster and the Mexican beaded lizard. Both live in southern US states and Mexic

insanity virus

Disease in its advanced stage.
Human beings are likely to catch this virus that sends them temporarily insane. It can start early as the photo below shows. Teen agers seem to be particularly prone to catching this disease which causes them to act in giggles or with cow-like looks ogling each other, pawing each other and sometimes taking off their clothes and doing unmentionable things to each other.
It is said that a cold shower three times a day and reading the good book will give immunity.
Spring is the time when it is most catching.

Anti-gravity?

Did they evolve over billions of years from viruses, microbes to invertebrates then finally to us? Are we THEM? Are we migrant aliens in our own land? Yes brother, we are. Hail the great spirit of interacting universal http://www.freewebs.com/area51topsecret/ AREA 51 ......................................................It was only a few days ago when I was pondering the supposed energy shortage that my recollection of a T.V. demonstration returned. It was something I had marveled at thirty years before, but had almost forgotten. Remembering it, an idea began to form and I soon found myself at my desk with pencil and paper inventing a revolutionary means of transport. "Let's see now," I mused "It better be disk- shaped so it will be able to skim along the sky and change direction in a flash!" I became enthusiastic thinking that I could invent a machine using a different energy source, That of "gravity." What I had seen on T.V. was a fairly puny man trying to lift a bar with circular weights (the same king of device that weightlifters use.) Obviously it was too much for him. Stage two of this demonstration was this guy using an electric motor to spin the circular weight on one end and then doing the same thing to the weight on the other end. With the two heavy weights revolving at high speed he lifted the bar high about his head with one hand. Remembering this, I reasoned that I could use this principle to raise a weight (the human body?) and move it around in the air. I figured that additional energy would be necessary from a conventional motor to help with the lift and proposed that a small helicopter blade and motor would do the job, or maybe a fan below would give enough lift. The hybrid machine would use much less conventional fuel. as much of the energy would come from gravity (or was it anti-gravity?) I had a vague feeling that the principles of the gyroscope was involved. So I did what I always do, I checked the internet. To my surprise (perhaps chagrin) I found that my idea has already been extensively tested and the results have been patented. Out the window went my hopes for fame and glory as tumbled back to reality with a bump. Still it doesn't matter who invented it, does it? As long as someone gets it into production.(Ric) http://newilluminati.blog-city.com/antigravity_machine.htm Sandy Kidd set out to create an anti-gravity machine in 1980, a device which could one day power flying saucers with energy derived from high-speed gyroscopes. While working as a planning engineer with a North Sea oil company for four years, he spent nearly every spare minute in a makeshift workshop in his garden shed in Dundee, Scotland. Then, at Christmas in 1984, his machine generated its first vertical thrust. “Not much, but it was there and I was over the moon,” he recalls. A few weeks later the device was demonstrated at Imperial College, London, for Professor Eric Laithwaite, a pioneering expert on gyroscopes.

After watching the three kilogram, 45-centimetre unit with a gyroscope at each end of a crossarm rise from the test-bench against a counter-weight, he described Kidd as ‘ingenious’.

“What we have here is a potential space drive,” Laithwaite said. “Properly developed, this would take you to the outer universe on a spoonful of uranium.”

Two years later, research physicist Dr Bill Ferrier of Dundee university examined the device on campus. “Its potential is mind-boggling,” Ferrier announced. After Sandy Kidd moved to Australia a second prototype was tested in Melbourne for three days under the supervision of specialist engineers. Placed in a sealed wooden box, it was suspended from a cord attached to an overhead beam fitted with sensitive measuring instruments. Powered by a model aircraft engine, the entire device lost weight as the vertical thrust overcame the ‘force’ of gravity.

“It created enough thrust to float a small orange through the middle of a room,” said Kidd. “People in the laboratory were clearly shaken.”

The Kidd Machine produces lift without reacting on air, water or a solid surface and therefore appears to be defying Newton’s Third Law of Motion that states that every action must have an equal and opposite reaction.

“What Kidd has achieved will certainly shake the scientific world to the core when they realize the implications of the results,” announced prematurely optimistic astrophysicist Dr Harold Aspden of Southampton University in the 1980s. “It should now be possible to build a machine big enough to lift itself off the ground with a full payload.”

Mr Kidd was working under contract to BWN, an Australian-based company. BWN refused to divulge laboratory details despite wide mainstream media disclosure, including demonstrations on a number of TV programs. “Full public disclosure would simply encourage others to build similar devices and perhaps overtake us,” said Noel Carrol of BWN. “Industrial espionage is another risk we face.” Work to increase lift and design a commercial prototype “may take several years but we’ll get there,” said Kidd in 1988…

My question (from Ric Williams, webmaster) "If that happened back in 1988, what has happened in the last twenty years? Have the multi-national oil companies and motor manufacturers bought the patent and shelved it so they can continue to make trillions from motorists paying far too much for gasoline?"

1123 LAWRENCE SHANNON was indicted for stealing, on 13th of April, 3 razors, value 3s.; 1 shaving box, value 4d.; 1 shaving brush, value 2d.; 1 pair of trousers, value 2s.; 1 chain, value 2s.; 1 seal, value 6d.; 1 comb, value 4d.; 1 book, value 6d.; and 1 halfpenny, the property of Elijah Farmer.

Elijah Farmer. I am a plumber and glazier - I lodge in Baker's row, Mile-end road; I have been there four or five years. The prisoner came there about eight days before this happened - I believe he is a slipper-maker; I went out between five and six o'clock in the morning, on the 13th of April - I left the prisoner there; he slept in the same room - my box was near the bed; it was locked - when I came home the hinges were nearly off, and I missed the articles stated out of it; the prisoner was gone - I did not see him again until the 26th, when he was in custody in Worship street; I have not found any of my property - he has given no notice of leaving; I expected him to come home in the evening.
MARY COBB. I am mistress of the house - prosecutor has been with me for years. The prisoner came there on the 1st of April, to lodge by the week - on the 13th he left without notice; about half past seven o'clock after the prosecutor was gone, I heard him come down and shut the door - he never returned; he took away his night cap and his property - the prosecutor complained of losing his property ; I went the same evening to where the prisoner had told me I might have his address, No.
38 Great Garden street - as I went up the steps I saw him at the window; I went into the passage - the room door was locked; I saw a young woman, who made a sort of stammer - I said I wanted to see the prisoner, and it was no use denying it, for I had seen him; she then went into the back room, and said 'You had better come forward, she has seen you;" he then came forward, and I accused him of it - he denied it; I said, "The young man is at the corner of the street, and you had better go with me to him;" he went with me part of the way, and then ran away - my brother , who was with me, ran after him, but did not like to follow him further; we afterwards heard he was at No. 21, Baker's row - we sent for him; he was denied, but the officer got him.

Prisoner. You said you would give charge of me.
Witness. Yes, I did, and I would if I could have got an officer.
Prisoner's defence. I did not run - the prosecutor's room door was wide open, and there was free access for any of the lodgers ; I had not time to return to my lodgings - she came the same afternoon; I never did such a thing - I was at my father's house, and my sister told me she had come; she did not say she had seen me.

Study Links Brain Cancer to Children Using Cell Phones

Tuesday March 17, 2009
People who begin using mobile phones before age 20 are more than five times as likely to develop a malignant brain tumor, according to an international group of scientists who studied the effects of electromagnetic fields and radio frequency radiation on living cells and human health.

The team examined the results of 15 studies from health researchers in six different countries, and reported their findings in the journal Pathophysiology. The scientists also called on nations worldwide to adopt tougher safety standards for mobile phone use and to issue warnings about the potential danger of cell phone radiation, particularly for children.

Dr. Lennart Hardell, an oncologist from University Hospital in Sweden, found that after one or more years of cell phone use, the risk of brain cancer in people who begin using mobile phones before they turn 20 is 5.2 times greater than for the general population. For people who begin using mobile phones later in life, the risk of a malignant brain tumor is 1.4 times greater.

"What stands out is the consistency of the association of exposure and disease,” said Dr. David Carpenter, director of the Institute for Health & the Environment at the University at Albany and a co-author of the report. “The evidence, as I see it, is sufficiently strong that there needs to be public warnings, there needs to be establishments of exposure guidelines and that the present guidelines — in Canada, the United States or anywhere else — are not protective of human health.

"I see us facing a major problem in the future because of the fact that young children are on cell phones constantly, and we may be setting ourselves up for an epidemic of brain cancer, the same thing we did with cigarette smoking and lung cancer."

The official position of most government agencies charged with monitoring the public health risks of cell phone radiation—and certainly the stance of the wireless phone industry—is that there is not sufficient scientific evidence to determine that cell phones pose a risk to human health. Yet, scientists continue to study the issue and their findings continue to raise questions.

These new findings, which indicate a much higher potential risk of brain cancer for children who use cell phones, should at least serve as a caution for parents.

UN soldiers accused of atrocities in Somalia: Human rights group urges adherence to Geneva Conventions

RICHARD DOWDEN, Africa Editor

Friday, 30 July 1993

THE United Nations force in Somalia (Unosom) is accused of atrocities including killing of unarmed people, the bombing of a hospital, beating civilians and theft, according to a report published in London today.*

Africa Rights, a newly formed human rights body, accuses the United States-led operation of 'grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions' and acting with 'near-total impunity'. Complaints procedures against the UN are woefully inadequate, the report says. It calls on the UN to reverse the policy of militarisation of the aid operation and for strict adherence to the Geneva Conventions.

Its most serious complaints concern the helicopter gunship attacks on buildings on 17 June and 12 July, but it also accuses the UN of the killing of unarmed civilians, the forced relocation of Mogadishu residents and the demolition of their homes. 'These are not cases of undisciplined actions by individual soldiers, but stem from the highest echelons of the command structure,' the report says.

The report will reopen the dispute between the American command in Mogadishu and the Italians and other forces that broke out two weeks ago over repeated American helicopter gunship raids aimed at killing General Mohamed Farah Aideed, the leader of the largest Somali faction. The Italians complained that the attempt to kill Gen Aideed was counterproductive, and demanded a return to the humanitarian aims of the operation.

The report concedes that the UN troops are in a difficult and dangerous position and accepts that Gen Aideed's forces have committed many gross violations of human rights, but says this does not excuse UN atrocities in reply. It adds that in Bardera the UN force has been 'consistently respectful of human rights'. It says that the welcome given by Somalis to US forces last December turned to disappointment, then bitterness and finally anger. 'Unfortunately the bloodiest confrontations are yet to come,' it predicts.

Describing the attack on Digfer Hospital by US, French and Moroccan forces - at least nine patients died - Africa Rights says: 'There is a prima-facie case that the UN command in Mogadishu committed a grave breach of the Geneva Conventions . . . The case warrants detailed and independent investigation to determine whether a war crime has been committed, and if so by whom, and with what level of culpability.

Just a year ago more attacks by U.S. forces on Somalia have occurred, many not reported in the press.

The piracy can be better understood in the light of foreign incursions into their territory.

America has launched a missile attack on southern Somalia against a suspected terrorist with links to al-Qa'eda.

Three Tomahawk missiles fired from a submarine hit the town of Dobley, five miles from Somalia's border with Kenya, destroying a house and injuring at least six people.

A Pentagon official said it was a "deliberate and precise strike" aimed at a specific target - believed to have been Hassan Turki, the head of the hardline Shebab youth organisation - at a meeting of militant Islamists.

"This attack was against a known al-Qa'eda terrorist," said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman.

"As we have repeatedly said, we will continue to pursue terrorist activities and their operations wherever we may find them."

It was unclear last night if the attack had achieved its objective.

It was the fourth air strike by US forces in Somalia in 14 months, all targeted at hardliners who Washington believed were linked to al-Qa'eda.

None of the earlier attacks succeeded in killing the targets, the US has admitted.

Move elephants into Australia, scientist proposes

Feb. 1, 2012

and World Science staff

Australia may need an infusion of elephants and other large mammals to solve its persistent ecological and wildfire problems, a scientist proposes.

Ecologist David Bowman of the University of Tasmania in Australia cites out-of-control fires and burgeoning feral-animal populations as quandaries afflicting the Land Down Under. Both could be solved by introducing large mammals, as well as paying aboriginal hunters to control the feral animals and restore the old practice of patch burning, he argues. Patch burning is a form of controlled burning intended to clean out and renew biological resources.

“I realize that there are major risks associated with what I am proposing,” as any tinkering with the environment can lead to unplanned consequences, said Bowman. “But the usual approaches to managing these issues aren’t working.”

Bowman describes his idea in this week’s issue of the research journalNature.

Feb. 7 will mark the three-year anniversary of “Black Saturday,” when nearly 200 people died in a massive firestorm in southern Australia. Fires are a constant concern in the continent, said Bowman, but so are its thriving populations of feral pigs, camels, horses and cattle, among others.

Bowman proposes to manage Australia’s troubled ecosystem by introducing beasts such as elephants, rhinoceros and even Komodo dragons. These would help consume flammable grasses and control feral-animal populations, he argues.

The largest living land mammal native to Australia is the red kangaroo, which as an adult weighs about as much as an average man. Larger mammals used to roam the continent—such as a hippo-sized marsupial related to the wombat and called diprotodon, from the Great Ice Age—but they are no more.

The deliberate introduction by humans of populations of oversized, non-native mammals to a new continent would be unprecedented in modern times. One group, though, has proposed introducing large African mammals into the Great Plains of the United States, for somewhat different reasons than those motivating Bowman.

William Nash came to Australia as a Marine with the First Fleet 1788
William and Mariah's first child, William, was baptised on Sunday 25th May 1788
A wedding was celebrated at St Phillip's, Sydney, on 13 February 1789, between William Nash, a marine, and Maria Haynes, a convict, in the presence of Elizabeth Gratten and Samuel Barnes (Chaplain's clerk)
Mariah Haynes is not listed in John Cobley's 'Crimes of the First Fleet Convicts'
By 1803 William & Maria had separated, and she took the children with her. Maria later became associated with two other men, Robert Guy and in 1816, with William Neale.

6 Children1. William Nash born on 25 May 1788, buried on Friday 19th June 1789, a marine's child.
2. John Nash baptised 15 Jan 1792 (a family source names him William)
3. Mary Nash born 2 March 1793 and baptised 2 April
4. William Nash born 27 March 1795 and baptised 4 May
5. George Nash born 26 July 1797
6. Sarah Nash was born 16 Nov 1798
6. Sarah Nash 16 Nov 1798 wed on the 15th January 1814 at St John's, Parramatta, to John Williams (a convict), 13 children

On 25th April 2010 Stephen Hawking, leading academic and cosmologist, told the Sunday Times: “We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.” He also points out that making contact with aliens could be very risky, stating: “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”

curious street title

Gropecunt Lane

Gropecunt Lane was a name used in Oxford, London and other Englishtowns and cities in the Middle Ages for streets where prostitutes conducted their business. The name derives from cunt, the Middle English term forfemale genitalia, and the act of groping. There was also a Gropecunt Lane inDublin, Ireland near where the Savoy Cinema is now. Later sensibilities changed many names of streets bearing this name to more polite variations.

In London, the street that was Gropecunt Lane was near the present-day site of the Barbican Centre in the City of London. The street was called Grub Street in the 18th century, but renamed Milton Street in 1830 . Another street with a similar history in Southwark is Horselydown Lane ("whores lie down"), which is just to the south of Tower Bridge, and was also the site of the famousAnchor Brewhouse.

We come in Third with Williams.

Williams

is a patronymic form of the name William that originated in medieval England[2] and later came to be extremely popular in Wales. The meaning is derived from son or descendant of Guillemin, the French form of William. Derived from an Old French given name with Germanicelements; will = desire, will; and helm = helmet, protection.[3] It is the second most common surname in Wales and the third most common surname in the whole of the United Kingdom, the third most common in the United States of America and Australia and the fifth most common inNew Zealand.[4]

Old Harry Williams was asked how was it that the long list of Williams lead by far those of Nash over the last couple of hundred years.

"Well, let's see.Them Nashes they was more posh and they kept the family bible, so we lot had nothing to read at night. There was no T.V. in them days, and we didn't want to waste candles, so we used to all jump in bed together and make more Williams's."

Australia. The first fleet sailed from England in 1787 carrying marine William Nash and his common law wife Maria Haynes. They were the progenitors of an extensive Nash family in Australia. Another early settler was Andrew Nash. He had acquired the Woolpack Inn in Parramatta in 1821 and became well-known for the prowess of his racehorses. A later settler from Wiltshire was James Nash. He discovered gold along the Mary river in Queenland and helped precipitate the second Australian gold rush.

There were also Nash convicts in Australia. Some thrived; Robert Nash, transported on the Albemarle in 1791; John Nash on the Eleanor in 1831; and Michael Nash from Limerick, on the Rodney in 1851.

This is my niece in the Philippines who
needs serious attention from some sincere young man.

Neither here nor there.

If a man was on an escalator, but walking back down it and the elevator was located in a revolving restaurant on a large airliner going in a southerly direction and the earth was revolving on its axis and at the same time was travelling in an elliptical path around the sun, which was travelling around the galaxy, which was expanding......how many movements was the man travelling in?

Wild man of North Australia.

I met Michael (Tarzan) Fomenko(shown here at 81 years) son of a Russian Princess when I was 18 and he was twenty. He was a handsome young man. I was in love with his sister Nina Fomenko, who was gracious to me but held my ardour at arms' length. In later years I met her in North Queensland where she and her husband Brian Patrick Donnellan were cutting cane. They had no mattress to sleep on, so I bought them one. Nina was always beautiful. Toonoom Falls
Situated in the heart of Royal National Park to the south of Sydney, Toonoum Falls is a pretty, 5 metre high waterfall alongside Sir Bertram Steven Drive not far from the Garie turnoff. The photo shows the falls in flood.
Location: Royal National Park.

In the fifties, I lived close to here in a rock shelter once used by Aborigines. I used to swim in this creek a little further down the hill. My family thought I was crazy and I probably was, but life here on the edge of the National Park was idyllic if you could bear the flies, mosquitoes, snakes and centipedes.. (Ric)

*The Australian Lyre Bird is the world's best imitator; able to mimic the calls of 15 different species of birds in their locality and string the calls into a melody. Also been known to mimic the sound mobile phones.

*The echidna is such a unique animal that it is classified in a special class of mammals known asmonotremes, which it shares only with the platypus. The echidna lays eggs like a duck but suckles its young in a pouch like a kangaroo. For no apparent reason, it may decide to conserve energy by dropping its body temperature to 4 degrees and remain at that temperature from 4 to 120 days. Lab experiments have shown that the echidna is more intelligent that a cat and it has been seen using its spikes, feet and beaks to climb up crevices like a mountaineer edging up a rock chimney.

*Purple wallaby - The Purple-neck Rock Wallaby [Petrogale Purpureicollis], inhabits the Mt Isa region in Northwest Queensland. The Wallaby secretes a dye that transforms its face and neck into colours ranging from light pink to bright purple.

*The Fierce Snake or Inland Taipan has the most toxic venom of any snake. Maximum yield recorded (for one bite) is 110mg. That would probably be enough to kill over 100 people or 250,000 mice.

*The Wombat deposits square poos on logs, rocks and even upright sticks that it uses tomark its territory.

*A 10kg Tasmanian Devil is able to exert the same biting pressure as a 40kg dog. It can also eat almost a third of its body weight in a single feeding.

*Australia is the smallest, flattest, and driest inhabited continent in the world. It is the only country which is also a whole continent.

*Over 90% of Australia is dry, flat and arid. Almost three-quarters of the land cannot support agriculture in any form.

*A baby kangaroo at the time of its birth measures 2 centimetres.

*Kangaroos need very little water to survive and are capable of going for months without drinking at all. When they do need water, they dig 'wells' for themselves; frequently going as deep as three or four feet. These 'kangaroo pits' are a common source of water for other animals living in the kangaroo's environment.

Kangaroo attacks dog, man. ^

*A kangaroo being chased by a dog may jump into a dam. If the dog gives chase, the kangaroo may turn towards the dog, then use its paws to push the dogs head underwater in order to drown it.

*Emus and kangaroos cannot walk backwards, and are on the Australian coat of arms for that reason.

*A monotreme is a animal that lays eggs and suckles its young. The world's only monotremes are the platypus and the echidna.

*The male platypus has a poisonous spine that can kill a dog and inflict immense pain on a human.

*When a specimen of the platypus was first sent to England, it was believed the Australians had played a joke by sewing the bill of a duck onto a rat.

*Box Jelly fish - The box jellyfish is considered the world's most venomous marine creature. The box jellyfish has killed more people in Australia than stonefish, sharks and crocodiles combined.

*The Sydney Funnelweb spider is considered the world's most deadly spider. It is the only spider that has killed people in less than 2 hours. Its fangs are powerful enough to bite through gloves and fingernails. The only animals without immunity to the funnelweb's venom are humans and monkeys.

*Lung fish - Queensland is home to lung fish, a living fossil from the Triassic period 350 million years ago.

Convicts

*It is estimated that by the time transportation ended in 1868, 40 per cent of Australia's English-speaking population were convicts.
*A census taken in 1828 found that half the population of NSW were Convicts, and that former Convicts made up nearly half of the free population.

*In 2007, it was estimated that 22 per cent of living Australians had a convict ancestor.

*Convicts were not sent to Australia for serious crimes. Serious crimes, such as murder, rape, or impersonating an Egyptian were given the death sentence in England.

*Crimes punishable by transportation included recommending that politicians get paid, starting a union, stealing fish from a river or pond, embezzlement, receiving or buying stolen goods, setting fire to underwood, petty theft, or being suspected of supporting Irish terrorism.

* Alcohol- It has been reported that the first European settlers in Australia drank more alcohol per head of population than any other community in the history of mankind.

* Police force - Australia's first police force was a band of 12 of the most well behaved Convicts.

* Mass moonings - In 1832, 300 female Convicts at the Cascade Female Factory mooned the Governor of Tasmania during a chapel service. It was said that in a "rare moment of collusion with the Convict women, the ladies in the Governor's party could not control their laughter.
