Global warming and Acid Oceans?

Watching the gulls and waves at sunset after the big winter storm, Ocean Beach, San Francisco 1/4/2008 - 1111 by David Sifry.
Global warming and acid oceans have been blamed on greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels. Now growing evidence suggests Mother Nature is the most likely cause.

A study by Australian geology researcher, Timothy Casey contests the recent claims by environmentalists that man-made emissions of carbon dioxide have been causing ocean acidification.

These disturbing claims have been perplexing geologists, among other researchers, who have failed to detect any increase in acidification in the word's rivers, lakes, reservoirs and aquariums. In well-documented doomsaying by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) ocean acidification has been a key concern. Environmentalists have long proposed that if ocean acidification continues it will stress marine fisheries and cause the destruction of coral reefs.

It was the distinct lack of acidification of all the planet’s other water sources that prompted researchers to investigate why oceans alone were showing signs of increasing acidification.

Is ‘Volcanogate’ About to Erupt in the Wake of Climategate?

Sceptics argue the IPCC has failed to apply joined up thinking to explain this anomaly. The latest reasoning of climate sceptic scientists seems faultless: if human atmospheric emissions of carbon dioxide were causing the oceans to acidify then why weren’t we seeing the same levels of rising acidity in rivers and reservoirs?

Now geologists have investigated this question further and come up with new answers. They argue, if there is such a difference between our oceans and our rivers and reservoirs then the source couldn’t be common to both. By finding no increases anywhere in inland water systems this study has inevitably concluded that any human emissions into the atmosphere of carbon dioxide must be excluded as a potential source of oceanic acidification. The greenhouse gas theory has been under a cloud since researchers admitted there had been no statistically significant global warming for 15 years.

Earlier Studies Support the Latest Findings

Oceanographers Hillier and Watts (2007) surveyed 201,055 submarine volcanoes. From this they concluded an astounding total of 3,477,403 submarine volcanoes must reasonably exist worldwide. They based this finding on the earlier and well-respected observations of Earth and Planetary Sciences specialist, Batiza (1982) who found that at least 4 per cent of seamounts are active volcanoes.

Facts About Volcano Numbers Suppressed by Global Warming Activists

Controversy has dogged the IPCC in the wake of the Climategate and Glaciergate revelations indicating climatologists deliberately hid or distorted climate data. Climate sceptics have questioned the attempts of some alarmist scientists to downplay the role of volcanoes in adding to the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. According to the highly regarded earlier survey by Batiza (1982), Pacific mid-plate underwater volcanoes, a highly unstable region, alone accounts for an incredible 22,000 to 55,000 with at least 2,000 of them being active. However, it appears that the IPCC has downplayed these numbers.

None of the more than 2,000 active submarine volcanoes have even been discussed in Kerrick (2001), a paper referred to by the IPCC and used to eliminate volcanoes as an important factor in CO2 output into the atmosphere.

Furthermore, Kerrick (2001) justifies the omission of mid oceanic ridge emissions by claiming that mid oceanic ridges discharge less CO2 than is consumed by mid oceanic ridge hydrothermal carbonate systems. There is no evidence to support such a conclusion.

Some Volcanoes More Active Than Previously Thought

Casey's study looked at examples such as the Blue Lake in the crater of dormant volcano, Mount Gambier, now acidifying due to volcanogenic CO2 input. It lies in the regional centre of the Limestone Coast in the South East of South Australia. It has now been found Mount Gambier is not quite so dormant as some studies suggested. If this fact was repeated world-wide then it would dispel concerns that human emitted greenhouse gases were the cause of rising levels of sea acidity. The real culprit seems to have been Nature all along.

No Reports of Acidification of Rivers and Reservoirs

To further confirm the conclusions of this geological study, commercial suppliers of pumps that aerate inland water sources such as lakes and reservoirs, report no increase in business due to acidification. In fact, there is no demand for any filtering equipment to remove carbon dioxide from air pumped into inland water systems. If it were really true that the oceans are acidifying (this is hotly disputed, in itself) then given that isolated water reservoirs and aquariums are not acidifying as well, the source cannot be common to both.

The logical conclusion, therefore, is that atmospheric carbon dioxide can not be the cause of oceanic acidification as we once thought. Thus we may fairly infer it is a non-problem.

So they don't feel pain, huh? They're not human yet, huh?

U.S.State to limit abortions because of foetal pain

TWO landmark measures putting new restrictions on abortion became law in Nebraska today, including one that critics say breaks with court precedent by changing the legal rationale for a ban on later-term abortions.

Republican Governor Dave Heineman signed both bills, one barring abortions at and after 20 weeks of pregnancy and the other requiring women to be screened before having abortions for mental health and other problems. Both sides of the abortion debate say the laws are firsts of their kind in the US.

A national abortion rights group already appeared to be girding for a legal challenge, calling the ban after 20 weeks ''flatly unconstitutional'' because it is based on the assertion that foetuses feel pain, not on the ability of a foetus to survive outside the womb.

''It absolutely cannot survive a challenge without a change to three decades of court rulings,'' said Nancy Northup, president of the Centre for Reproductive Rights. ''Courts have been chipping away at abortion rights ... this would be like taking a huge hacksaw to the rights.''

The law focusing on late-term abortions is designed to shut down one of the few doctors in the nation who performs them in Nebraska.

Set to take effect in October, it is based on the claim that foetuses can feel pain at 20 weeks. The current standard in abortion restrictions is viability, or when a foetus is able to survive outside the womb - generally at 22 to 24 weeks.

The law could lead to changes in state laws across the country if upheld by the courts, said Mary Spaulding Balch, legislative director for National Right to Life.

''It would broaden the interests of states in protecting the unborn child,'' she said. ''It says the state has an interest in the unborn child before viability.''

Mr Heineman also signed the other bill, approved by lawmakers on Monday, that requires the screening for mental health problems and other risk factors indicating if women might have problems after having abortions.

The foetal-pain bill is partially meant to shut down Dr LeRoy Carhart, who attracted attention after his friend and fellow late-term abortion provider Dr George Tiller was shot to death by an abortion foe in Kansas last year.

Kansas, worried that he might move there, has passed new bills that are awaiting action fromGovernor Mark Parkinson, an abortion-rights Democrat. They would require doctors to list an exact medical diagnosis justifying a late-term abortion and also adjusts the definition of viability so that a foetus would be considered viable if there's a ''reasonable probability'' it would survive outside the womb with life-sustaining measures such as an incubator.

Also, it codifies a state rule that the required second opinion on whether late-term abortions are necessary come from doctors in Kansas.

Attempts to restrict abortion across the country aren't unusual - in Oklahoma, for example, new laws on abortions have been approved this year including a ban on abortions based on the gender of the child and tighter restrictions on the use of the RU-486 abortion pill.

South Dakota voters in 2006 and 2008 turned down proposals to ban abortion outright.

Nebraska's law barring abortions after 20 weeks is sure to be challenged in court. Dr Carhart has suggested he might do so. In January, he told The Associated Press, ''they can pass any law they want to ... and spend millions of dollars to go to court and lose.''

A spokesman for Dr Carhart said this week that he has no plans to leave Nebraska, but is exploring his options and isn't ruling out a move to Kansas.

The switch from viability to foetal pain in justifying abortion limits raises fresh legal issues.

Abortion opponents say a 2007 US Supreme Court ruling upholding a federal ban on certain late-term abortions opens the door for such legislation because it suggests states have an interest in protecting foetuses. They also say new studies and testimony from doctors prove foetuses feel pain at 20 weeks.

''The Nebraska Legislature has taken a bold step which should ratchet up the abortion debate across the nation,'' Nebraska Right to Life director Julie Schmit-Albin said. ''What we didn't know in 1973 in Roe versus Wade ... we know now.''

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, however, says it knows of no legitimate evidence that foetuses experience pain at that stage.

''There is certainly no solid scientific evidence establishing that a foetus can perceive pain at these earlier stages, so any court decisions to uphold such broader laws could only do so by disregarding the importance of good scientific evidence,'' said Caitlin Borgmann, a law professor at The City University of New York.

The US Supreme Court would have to overturn earlier abortion-related rulings to uphold the Nebraska law, Ms Borgmann said, including a 1992 ruling in Planned Parenthood v Casey that upheld the right of women to have abortions before foetuses were viable.

Did we come from Outer Space?

Exo Organisms Discovered In Earth's Stratosphere

393302143_e5ead768edAn Indian exploration of the upper atmosphere has revealed life-forms unlike anything ever seen before. Now the debate on about the implications of three entirely new bacteria, incredibly adapted extremophiles which live in the sky and laugh at lethal ultraviolet rays.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) searched the stratosphere with a cryogenically-equipped balloon, taking samples of the stratosphere at heights ranging from twenty to forty thousand meters straight up. These samples, independently analyzed at two separate facilities, have confirmed nine bacterial and fungal strains which are quite normal - and three which definitely aren't.

These single-celled stratospheric citizens display a markedly higher tolerance for ultraviolet radiation than their closest colleagues, which have a tendency to die. And don't mistake how exciting the "alien" idea is - nobody is saying that these three bacteria hovered in from space: they're saying that the incredible UV tolerance supports the idea that maybe ALL bacteria, and everything that came from them (ie everything that moves), might have been seeded across the stars. The evidence is far from conclusive, but the idea is amazing. Previously people thought that the aggressive radiation bath that is space would sterilize any such spaceborne cells - these new examples disagree.

5 eyed space creatureHi, Cousin!
Many people believe that humanoids have visited Earth from space. This belief cannot be proven, and it seems very unlikely.
Let's examine, what we are made up of. Well, like every other known life-form on Earth, we are a collection of cells.
Cells came from primitive bacteria. The question now is: Could primitive bacteria have come from space. The answer is surely.... YES.
So if primitive bacteria have drifted through space and thrived and evolved in suitable habitats throughout the cosmos, then we surely have many outer- space relatives.....Most would be pretty weird, though, much more so than cousin Claude who picks his nose and eats it.(Ric)

Bacteria: The Space Colonists What'sNEW

Conrad Conrad
I always thought the most significant thing that we ever found on the whole goddamn Moon was that little bacteria who came back and lived and nobody ever said shit about it. — Pete Conrad (1)

On April 20, 1967, the unmanned lunar lander Surveyor 3 landed near Oceanus Procellarum on the surface of the moon. One of the things aboard was a television camera. Two-and-a-half years later, on November 20, 1969, Apollo 12 astronauts Pete Conrad and Alan L. Bean recovered the camera. When NASA scientists examined it back on Earth they were surprised to find specimens of Streptococcus mitis that were still alive. Because of the precautions the astronauts had taken, NASA could be sure that the germs were inside the camera when it was retrieved, so they must have been there before the Surveyor 3 was launched. These bacteria had survived for 31 months in the vacuum of the moon's atmosphere. Perhaps NASA shouldn't have been surprised, because there are other bacteria that thrive under near-vacuum pressure on the earth today. Anyway, we now know that the vacuum of space is not a fatal problem for bacteria.

What about the low temperature and the possible lack of liquid water in space? The bacteria that survived on the moon suffered huge monthly temperature swings and the complete lack of water. Freezing and drying, in the presence of the right protectants, are actually two ways normal bacteria can enter a state of suspended animation. And interestingly, if the right protectants aren't supplied originally, the bacteria that die first supply them for the benefit of the surviving ones! English microbiologist John Postgate discusses this fact in The Outer Reaches of Life (2):

"When a population of bacteria dries out without a protectant, many of the cells break open and release their internal contents. Among these contents are proteins, gums and sugars, all of which are protective. If the population is sufficiently dense, so that significant amounts of protectant are released, material released from the majority which died first can protect a few of their surviving fellows.

"Comparable considerations apply to death from freezing.... Protective substances such as glycerol are well known and widely used; they are called cryoprotectants. Bacteria frozen without such chemicals leak internal contents, among which are many substances that are cryoprotective."

Postgate says that bacteria have apparently survived for 4,800 years in the brickwork of Peruvian pyramids, and maybe even 300 million years in coal, using the drying strategy. He also describes bacteria that apparently survived for 11,000 years in the gut of a well-preserved mastodon, although in this case the colony may have continued to live and multiply using nutrients available in the carcass. Postgate gives several other examples of long-surviving bacteria, and he is careful to mention the possibility that some of the bacterial cultures may have been contaminated, so not all of the reports are necessarily reliable.

Some bacteria have another even more effective survival strategy: they form spores. Spores are bacterial cells in complete dormancy, with thick protective coats. In terms of our computer analogy, a bacterial spore is like a handheld calculator that has repackaged itself into its original protective shipping carton and turned itself off.

"The resistance of some bacterial cells to environmental destruction is impressive. Some bacteria form resistant cells called endospores. The original cell replicates its chromosome, and one copy becomes surrounded by a durable wall. The outer cell disintegrates, but the endospore it contains survives all sorts of trauma, including lack of nutrients and water, extreme heat or cold, and most poisons. Unfortunately, boiling water is not hot enough to kill most endospores in a reasonable length of time.... Endospores may remain dormant for centuries" (3).

Postgate concludes his chapter on spores, entitled "Immortality and the Big Sleep," by saying, "There may be much older spores out there, waiting for energetic microbiologists to revive them."

Bee in amber Ancient bee in amber

Thirty Million-Year Sleep: Germ Is Declared Alive!

There were much older spores waiting to be revived. On May 19, 1995, The New York Times carried a front-page story about them (4). Biologists Raul Cano and Monica Borucki had extracted bacterial spores from bees preserved in amber in Costa Rica. Amber is tree-sap that hardens and persists as a fossil. This amber had entrapped some bees and then hardened between 25 and 40 million years ago. Bacteria living in the bees' digestive tracts had recognized a problem and turned themselves into spores. When placed in a suitable culture, the spores came right back to life. As a control, the two biologists also attempted to culture from the same amber a number of samples that contained no bee parts. These cultures were negative, adding credibility to the experiment. This finding was originally reported in the journal Science (5) to general acceptance.

Revived bacteria Revived bacteria

Postgate, upon learning of this discovery, wrote an article for The Times of London that concluded as follows (6):

"... could life on this planet be descended from alien spores? ...Panspermia, the view that the seed of life is diffused throughout the universe, has been favored by a minority of thinkers since the Greek Anaxagoras in the 5th century BC. He, Arrhenius and Fred Hoyle may yet have the laugh on us doubters."

Conclusion

When the first bacteria colonized the earth, almost four billion years ago, it was by our standards a hostile place. There was no free oxygen to breathe and no ozone to block out the sun's damaging ultraviolet radiation. Nuclear radiation came from decaying U235, which was about fifty times more abundant then than now (7). The air was hot and full of noxious chemicals such as sulphurous gases released by volcanoes. Not for nothing is it called the Hadean Eon. However, there are bacteria which can live, even thrive, in a very wide variety of conditions that seem unfriendly to us (8).
"Life manages very well without oxygen, evolving into flourishing communities of anaerobes. Acidity... presents no problem, as sulphur bacteria and their co-habitants illustrate, nor does a considerable degree of alkalinity bother alkophiles.... Water purity is a trivial matter: saturated salt brines support abundant bacterial life. And pressure is quite irrelevant, with bacteria growing happily in a near vacuum or at the huge hydrostatic pressure of deep ocean trenches. Temperature, too, presents little problem: boiling hot springs support bacterial life, and bacteria have been found growing at 112 C in superheated geothermal water under hydrostatic pressure; conversely, other types of bacteria thrive at well below zero, provided the water is salty enough not to freeze. And even if they do get frozen, many bacteria revive when their habitat thaws. Even organic food is not a prerequisite...."

There are bacteria that metabolize iron, nitrogen, sulphur, and other inorganic materials. There are bacteria today that can live without sunlight. Archaebacteria that can withstand extreme heat have been found thriving in oil reservoirs a mile underground(9). Some species of cyanobacteria are highly resistant to ultraviolet radiation. The only thing absolutely essential for bacteria to live, grow, and multiply is liquid water. We are confident that the early Earth had plenty of water. Scientists believe that concentration of water in the earliest atmosphere for which they have data, over four billion years ago, was far higher than it is today.

Bacteria have the ability to colonize an unfriendly planet like the Hadean Earth. Not just had the ability but have the ability. These are not make believe stories. All of the bacteria we have considered, with all of their unusual abilities to survive extreme environments, are alive today!

Ash to cause further air chaos

Aviation experts are warning that flights into and out of Europe could continue to be disrupted by clouds of blackened ash from an Icelandic volcano.

On Friday thousands of people were left stranded at airports around the world, with an estimated 17,000 flights cancelled, after plumes of smoke spread across Europe.

Brian Flynn, assistant head of operations at Eurocontrol, an air navigation safety agency, said there were "sporadic eruptions" from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, with ash was still spewing into the sky.

"The situation is not expected to change dramatically in the next 24 hours," he said, adding that there would be "significant disruptions" in air traffic on Saturday.

A global association of air traffic control companies added that the ash was likely to disrupt European air space for "several days", the AFP news agency reported.

Europe's air-traffic control centre predicted 17,000 flights would be cancelled on Friday, and warned travellers they may face further disruption again on Saturday.

Some 12 European nations have closed their air space or grounded flights with the plume of black smoke threatening plane engines and pilot visibility.

Earlier, experts cautioned the fallout from the volcano in southeast Iceland could take several days to clear, and aviation authorities have refused to say when the skies would clear again.

On Friday, Britain, Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belgium, Poland and the Netherlands shut down all or most of their airspace.

Major disruption

Finland, France, Germany, Russia and Spain experienced major airline disruption on Friday, although Sweden and Norway have begun to reopen airspace.

The chaos has also threatened to inflict heavy financial losses on airlines and businesses, and there are growing fears about the transportation of food supplies and essential goods, should the ash delay flights for longer.

Poland has said it may postpone Sunday's funeral of Lech Kaczynski, the Polish president, who was killed in an air crashalong with 95 others last week, with the volcanic ash threatening to prevent some world leaders from attending.

Ireland's Catholics listened to the Pope's apology for the conduct of the Church throughout a long-running paedophilia scandal at Mass yesterday. But any hope that the extraordinary gesture would draw a line under the abuse claims was dashed when a senior German cleric became the first to admit that the church in the Pope's native Germany had "hidden for years" assaults by priests on young children.
Robert Zollitsch, the archbishop of Freiburg, told a German newspaper that the "assaults that took place in such numbers within our institutions shame and frighten me". His remarks came even as senior Vatican figures claimed that Pope Benedict's pastoral letter on the Irish abuse cases was the last word on the scandal.
Archbishop Rino Fisichella, head of the Pontifical Academy for Life, writing in the Italian Bishops' Conference newspaper L'Avvenire, said yesterday that "with this letter, we have decisively turned the page; nothing left unsaid, no excuses".

Archbishop Zollitsch had already apologised for a 20-year-old cover-up of sexual abuse that took place when he was in charge of human resources in the diocese of Freiburg. And some critics claimed the Pontiff had not accepted that Vatican policies of keeping abuse secret were in large part to blame.
Also, German newspaper Der Spiegel claimed to have seen new documents confirming that, as Archbishop of Munich and Freising in 1980, the then-Cardinal Ratzinger knew of priest Peter Hullermann's paedophile tendencies when he was accepted into the diocese.
Pope Benedict, in his first public address since the publication of the pastoral letter, made no direct mention of the paedophile scandal as he addressed pilgrims in St Peter's Square yesterday. He made only oblique references, calling on the faithful to be "unforgiving of the sin........

“I realize that there are major risks associated with what I am proposing,” as any tinkering with the environment can lead to unplanned consequences, said Bowman. “But the usual approaches to managing these issues aren’t working.”

Bowman describes his idea in this week’s issue of the research journalNature.

Feb. 7 will mark the three-year anniversary of “Black Saturday,” when nearly 200 people died in a massive firestorm in southern Australia. Fires are a constant concern in the continent, said Bowman, but so are its thriving populations of feral pigs, camels, horses and cattle, among others.

Bowman proposes to manage Australia’s troubled ecosystem by introducing beasts such as elephants, rhinoceros and even Komodo dragons. These would help consume flammable grasses and control feral-animal populations, he argues.

The largest living land mammal native to Australia is the red kangaroo, which as an adult weighs about as much as an average man. Larger mammals used to roam the continent—such as a hippo-sized marsupial related to the wombat and called diprotodon, from the Great Ice Age—but they are no more.

The deliberate introduction by humans of populations of oversized, non-native mammals to a new continent would be unprecedented in modern times. One group, though, has proposed introducing large African mammals into the Great Plains of the United States, for somewhat different reasons than those motivating Bowman.

Carol Baxter is my distant cousin. She has not directly contributed to this weblog, and has not ever in fact acknowledged its existence, but because of the valuable information I received from reading her website about our family, I am very indebted to her.
Another family website helped me considerably. This was "Our Williams Story" by another distant cousin, Kieran Williams
Our Williams Story
I am heartened by the many emerging websites about the descendants of William Nash and Maria Haynes.
Then there are the many threads from Monaro Pioneers.
Thank you for all the sources.
I am hoping that when I am no longer able to continue (being nearly 79) that someone else wll pick up the ball and continue my blog.Of course I have included my political views and my non-religious attitudes because they are part of me and readers do not have to accept them, but may actually learn a little from them.

William Nash came to Australia as a Marine with the First Fleet 1788
William and Mariah's first child, William, was baptised on Sunday 25th May 1788
A wedding was celebrated at St Phillip's, Sydney, on 13 February 1789, between William Nash, a marine, and Maria Haynes, a convict, in the presence of Elizabeth Gratten and Samuel Barnes (Chaplain's clerk)
Mariah Haynes is not listed in John Cobley's 'Crimes of the First Fleet Convicts'
By 1803 William & Maria had separated, and she took the children with her. Maria later became associated with two other men, Robert Guy and in 1816, with William Neale.

6 Children1. William Nash born on 25 May 1788, buried on Friday 19th June 1789, a marine's child.
2. John Nash baptised 15 Jan 1792 (a family source names him William)
3. Mary Nash born 2 March 1793 and baptised 2 April
4. William Nash born 27 March 1795 and baptised 4 May
5. George Nash born 26 July 1797
6. Sarah Nash was born 16 Nov 1798
6. Sarah Nash 16 Nov 1798 wed on the 15th January 1814 at St John's, Parramatta, to John Williams (a convict), 13 children

On 25th April 2010 Stephen Hawking, leading academic and cosmologist, told the Sunday Times: “We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.” He also points out that making contact with aliens could be very risky, stating: “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”

curious street title

Gropecunt Lane

Gropecunt Lane was a name used in Oxford, London and other Englishtowns and cities in the Middle Ages for streets where prostitutes conducted their business. The name derives from cunt, the Middle English term forfemale genitalia, and the act of groping. There was also a Gropecunt Lane inDublin, Ireland near where the Savoy Cinema is now. Later sensibilities changed many names of streets bearing this name to more polite variations.

In London, the street that was Gropecunt Lane was near the present-day site of the Barbican Centre in the City of London. The street was called Grub Street in the 18th century, but renamed Milton Street in 1830 . Another street with a similar history in Southwark is Horselydown Lane ("whores lie down"), which is just to the south of Tower Bridge, and was also the site of the famousAnchor Brewhouse.

We come in Third with Williams.

Williams

is a patronymic form of the name William that originated in medieval England[2] and later came to be extremely popular in Wales. The meaning is derived from son or descendant of Guillemin, the French form of William. Derived from an Old French given name with Germanicelements; will = desire, will; and helm = helmet, protection.[3] It is the second most common surname in Wales and the third most common surname in the whole of the United Kingdom, the third most common in the United States of America and Australia and the fifth most common inNew Zealand.[4]

Old Harry Williams was asked how was it that the long list of Williams lead by far those of Nash over the last couple of hundred years.

"Well, let's see.Them Nashes they was more posh and they kept the family bible, so we lot had nothing to read at night. There was no T.V. in them days, and we didn't want to waste candles, so we used to all jump in bed together and make more Williams's."

Australia. The first fleet sailed from England in 1787 carrying marine William Nash and his common law wife Maria Haynes. They were the progenitors of an extensive Nash family in Australia. Another early settler was Andrew Nash. He had acquired the Woolpack Inn in Parramatta in 1821 and became well-known for the prowess of his racehorses. A later settler from Wiltshire was James Nash. He discovered gold along the Mary river in Queenland and helped precipitate the second Australian gold rush.

There were also Nash convicts in Australia. Some thrived; Robert Nash, transported on the Albemarle in 1791; John Nash on the Eleanor in 1831; and Michael Nash from Limerick, on the Rodney in 1851.

This is my niece in the Philippines who
needs serious attention from some sincere young man.

Neither here nor there.

If a man was on an escalator, but walking back down it and the elevator was located in a revolving restaurant on a large airliner going in a southerly direction and the earth was revolving on its axis and at the same time was travelling in an elliptical path around the sun, which was travelling around the galaxy, which was expanding......how many movements was the man travelling in?

Wild man of North Australia.

I met Michael (Tarzan) Fomenko(shown here at 81 years) son of a Russian Princess when I was 18 and he was twenty. He was a handsome young man. I was in love with his sister Nina Fomenko, who was gracious to me but held my ardour at arms' length. In later years I met her in North Queensland where she and her husband Brian Patrick Donnellan were cutting cane. They had no mattress to sleep on, so I bought them one. Nina was always beautiful. Toonoom Falls
Situated in the heart of Royal National Park to the south of Sydney, Toonoum Falls is a pretty, 5 metre high waterfall alongside Sir Bertram Steven Drive not far from the Garie turnoff. The photo shows the falls in flood.
Location: Royal National Park.

In the fifties, I lived close to here in a rock shelter once used by Aborigines. I used to swim in this creek a little further down the hill. My family thought I was crazy and I probably was, but life here on the edge of the National Park was idyllic if you could bear the flies, mosquitoes, snakes and centipedes.. (Ric)

*The Australian Lyre Bird is the world's best imitator; able to mimic the calls of 15 different species of birds in their locality and string the calls into a melody. Also been known to mimic the sound mobile phones.

*The echidna is such a unique animal that it is classified in a special class of mammals known asmonotremes, which it shares only with the platypus. The echidna lays eggs like a duck but suckles its young in a pouch like a kangaroo. For no apparent reason, it may decide to conserve energy by dropping its body temperature to 4 degrees and remain at that temperature from 4 to 120 days. Lab experiments have shown that the echidna is more intelligent that a cat and it has been seen using its spikes, feet and beaks to climb up crevices like a mountaineer edging up a rock chimney.

*Purple wallaby - The Purple-neck Rock Wallaby [Petrogale Purpureicollis], inhabits the Mt Isa region in Northwest Queensland. The Wallaby secretes a dye that transforms its face and neck into colours ranging from light pink to bright purple.

*The Fierce Snake or Inland Taipan has the most toxic venom of any snake. Maximum yield recorded (for one bite) is 110mg. That would probably be enough to kill over 100 people or 250,000 mice.

*The Wombat deposits square poos on logs, rocks and even upright sticks that it uses tomark its territory.

*A 10kg Tasmanian Devil is able to exert the same biting pressure as a 40kg dog. It can also eat almost a third of its body weight in a single feeding.

*Australia is the smallest, flattest, and driest inhabited continent in the world. It is the only country which is also a whole continent.

*Over 90% of Australia is dry, flat and arid. Almost three-quarters of the land cannot support agriculture in any form.

*A baby kangaroo at the time of its birth measures 2 centimetres.

birth of joey http://zzz262.multiply.com/video/item/1831

*Kangaroos need very little water to survive and are capable of going for months without drinking at all. When they do need water, they dig 'wells' for themselves; frequently going as deep as three or four feet. These 'kangaroo pits' are a common source of water for other animals living in the kangaroo's environment.

Kangaroo attacks dog, man. ^

*A kangaroo being chased by a dog may jump into a dam. If the dog gives chase, the kangaroo may turn towards the dog, then use its paws to push the dogs head underwater in order to drown it.

*Emus and kangaroos cannot walk backwards, and are on the Australian coat of arms for that reason.

*A monotreme is a animal that lays eggs and suckles its young. The world's only monotremes are the platypus and the echidna.

*The male platypus has a poisonous spine that can kill a dog and inflict immense pain on a human.

*When a specimen of the platypus was first sent to England, it was believed the Australians had played a joke by sewing the bill of a duck onto a rat.

*Box Jelly fish - The box jellyfish is considered the world's most venomous marine creature. The box jellyfish has killed more people in Australia than stonefish, sharks and crocodiles combined.

*The Sydney Funnelweb spider is considered the world's most deadly spider. It is the only spider that has killed people in less than 2 hours. Its fangs are powerful enough to bite through gloves and fingernails. The only animals without immunity to the funnelweb's venom are humans and monkeys.

*Lung fish - Queensland is home to lung fish, a living fossil from the Triassic period 350 million years ago.

Convicts

*It is estimated that by the time transportation ended in 1868, 40 per cent of Australia's English-speaking population were convicts.
*A census taken in 1828 found that half the population of NSW were Convicts, and that former Convicts made up nearly half of the free population.

*In 2007, it was estimated that 22 per cent of living Australians had a convict ancestor.

*Convicts were not sent to Australia for serious crimes. Serious crimes, such as murder, rape, or impersonating an Egyptian were given the death sentence in England.

*Crimes punishable by transportation included recommending that politicians get paid, starting a union, stealing fish from a river or pond, embezzlement, receiving or buying stolen goods, setting fire to underwood, petty theft, or being suspected of supporting Irish terrorism.

* Alcohol- It has been reported that the first European settlers in Australia drank more alcohol per head of population than any other community in the history of mankind.

* Police force - Australia's first police force was a band of 12 of the most well behaved Convicts.

* Mass moonings - In 1832, 300 female Convicts at the Cascade Female Factory mooned the Governor of Tasmania during a chapel service. It was said that in a "rare moment of collusion with the Convict women, the ladies in the Governor's party could not control their laughter.
