William was a private marine, 58th Company. He had served in 1784-86 on the Plymouth guardship 'Bombay Castle' He arrived in New South Wales on the First Fleet ship 'Prince of Wales' and served at Port Jackson in the company of Captain John Shea. Before the fleet sailed from Portsmouth, he received 150 of 200 lashes on 3 May 1787 'for unsoldier Like behaviour'.
Maria and William were married by licence. Maria signed the register as Maria Haynes.
On 4 Mar 1790 Maria and William went to Norfolk Island aboard the ship 'Sirius'. William returned to Port Jackson to enlist in the NSW Corps on 13 Apr 1792.
Five children were born to William and Maria by by 1802, they had parted and Maria was living with Robert Guy. William's attempts to recover Maria through court action failed in Jun 1803, partly because he had not taken action on a previous order. He may have gained custody of at least two of the children Mary and William and perhaps John) but they remained in NSW when he advertised on 29 Apr 1804 that he was leaving the colony.
On 30 Dec 1796 William received a grant of 25 acres at Mulgrave Place and another 180 on 12 Nov 1797.

Australia may need an infusion of elephants and other large mammals to solve its persistent ecological and wildfire problems, a scientist proposes.

Ecologist David Bowman of the University of Tasmania in Australia cites out-of-control fires and burgeoning feral-animal populations as quandaries afflicting the Land Down Under. Both could be solved by introducing large mammals, as well as paying aboriginal hunters to control the feral animals and restore the old practice of patch burning, he argues. Patch burning is a form of controlled burning intended to clean out and renew biological resources.

“I realize that there are major risks associated with what I am proposing,” as any tinkering with the environment can lead to unplanned consequences, said Bowman. “But the usual approaches to managing these issues aren’t working.”

Bowman describes his idea in this week’s issue of the research journalNature.

Feb. 7 will mark the three-year anniversary of “Black Saturday,” when nearly 200 people died in a massive firestorm in southern Australia. Fires are a constant concern in the continent, said Bowman, but so are its thriving populations of feral pigs, camels, horses and cattle, among others.

Bowman proposes to manage Australia’s troubled ecosystem by introducing beasts such as elephants, rhinoceros and even Komodo dragons. These would help consume flammable grasses and control feral-animal populations, he argues.

The largest living land mammal native to Australia is the red kangaroo, which as an adult weighs about as much as an average man. Larger mammals used to roam the continent—such as a hippo-sized marsupial related to the wombat and called diprotodon, from the Great Ice Age—but they are no more.

The deliberate introduction by humans of populations of oversized, non-native mammals to a new continent would be unprecedented in modern times. One group, though, has proposed introducing large African mammals into the Great Plains of the United States, for somewhat different reasons than those motivating Bowman.

John Kerswell: A Welsh plasterer transported in 1828 at the age of 20 years to 15 years for stealing. Absconding four times and charged with being drunk three times, granted ToL in 1856 and Conditional Pardon in 1857. However, he received 20 years imprisonment for attempting to stab a policeman. He was released from Port Arthur in 1875.

William Forster: At age 17 years was transported for ten years for stealing a box writing desk. Misdemeanour followed misdemeanour and sentence added to sentence until in 1864 he was sentnenced to life for robbery under arms. The last mention of him is in 1872 when he was sent to the Separate Prison for misconduct.

Alexander Woods: A soldier with the 17th Regiment, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Woods (aged 30) was transported from Canada to Port Arthur for 14 years for desertion.
Returned to Hobart with a ToL in 1853 but returned to PA again in 1865 for 15 years for burglary. He was a church attendant in 1869 and was discharged in 1875.

Gropecunt Lane

Gropecunt Lane was a name used in Oxford, London and other Englishtowns and cities in the Middle Ages for streets where prostitutes conducted their business. The name derives from cunt, the Middle English term forfemale genitalia, and the act of groping. There was also a Gropecunt Lane inDublin, Ireland near where the Savoy Cinema is now. Later sensibilities changed many names of streets bearing this name to more polite variations.

In London, the street that was Gropecunt Lane was near the present-day site of the Barbican Centre in the City of London. The street was called Grub Street in the 18th century, but renamed Milton Street in 1830 . Another street with a similar history in Southwark is Horselydown Lane ("whores lie down"), which is just to the south of Tower Bridge, and was also the site of the famousAnchor Brewhouse.

Australia. The first fleet sailed from England in 1787 carrying marine William Nash and his common law wife Maria Haynes. They were the progenitors of an extensive Nash family in Australia. Another early settler was Andrew Nash. He had acquired the Woolpack Inn in Parramatta in 1821 and became well-known for the prowess of his racehorses. A later settler from Wiltshire was James Nash. He discovered gold along the Mary river in Queenland and helped precipitate the second Australian gold rush.

There were also Nash convicts in Australia. Some thrived; Robert Nash, transported on the Albemarle in 1791; John Nash on the Eleanor in 1831; and Michael Nash from Limerick, on the Rodney in 1851.

I met Michael (Tarzan) Fomenko(shown here at 81 years) son of a Russian Princess when I was 18 and he was twenty. He was a handsome young man. I was in love with his sister Nina Fomenko, who was gracious to me but held my ardour at arms' length. In later years I met her in North Queensland where she and her husband Brian Patrick Donnellan were cutting cane. They had no mattress to sleep on, so I bought them one. Nina was always beautiful. Toonoom Falls
Situated in the heart of Royal National Park to the south of Sydney, Toonoum Falls is a pretty, 5 metre high waterfall alongside Sir Bertram Steven Drive not far from the Garie turnoff. The photo shows the falls in flood.

In the fifties, I lived close to here in a rock shelter once used by Aborigines. I used to swim in this creek a little further down the hill. My family thought I was crazy and I probably was, but life here on the edge of the National Park was idyllic if you could bear the flies, mosquitoes, snakes and centipedes.. (Ric)

*The Australian Lyre Bird is the world's best imitator; able to mimic the calls of 15 different species of birds in their locality and string the calls into a melody. Also been known to mimic the sound mobile phones.

*The echidna is such a unique animal that it is classified in a special class of mammals known asmonotremes, which it shares only with the platypus. The echidna lays eggs like a duck but suckles its young in a pouch like a kangaroo. For no apparent reason, it may decide to conserve energy by dropping its body temperature to 4 degrees and remain at that temperature from 4 to 120 days. My little brother Brian Robert Williams is buried there in an unmarked grave. He was three years old in 1936 when he was run over by a red truck when I (4 years old) and he were crossing the Princes Highway Kirrawee.
I never recovered as I felt I was blamed for not looking after him when we were going across the road to buy some lollies. I am now 81 years old.
My grandmother Lucy Williams (Pike) was cremated there and the ashes are in an alcove in the wall near the crematorium. She was nineteen stone when she died.
Old grandfather Harry (Henry Inglis Williams) is also buried there. He was a tough old bugger but I loved him anyway. He was a descendant of William Nash who came here as a marine with the First Fleet 1788.
I want to be buried in this cemetery because I was a baby in a bush camp just below the cemetery gates in 1933. We got water from the cemetery tap at the corner of Ist Ave Loftus. However I am in Vancouver Canada and will be interred far from home. Cedric hector (Ric) Williams.

The shearers now are scattered many miles and far ;
Some in other sheds perhaps, singing out for "tar."
Down at the bar, there the old shearer stands,

Saying "Come on, landlord, come on, come !
I'm shouting for all hands, what's yours--mine's a rum ;"
He chucks down his cheque, which is collared in a crack,
And the landlord with a pen writes no mercy on the back !

Enlarge image to correct size,or if the size wanted is larger than screen, then cut into sections and repeat procedures for each section.
Adhere tracing paper to piece of glass which fits onto computer screen (affix with tape).
Trace image on computer through glass onto tracing paper with light fine pencil strokes.
This tracing may be further enlarged to final original size required with photocopy machine.
Place carbon copy paper onto stretched canvas (for oil painting ) or prepared board for watercolor or gauche.
Place tracing on top.
Lightly trace over the lines with either a fine pencil or tracing tool.
Use the traced design on the canvas or board as a guide for painting..
Use palette knife brushes etc for special effects.

idea for reproducing print on fabric

I've been having fun printing on fabric.
My friend, Sandrine, and I were experimenting with printing on fabric using the home printer (ink jet) and computer. It is easy to do. Just trim your selected fabric and some freezer paper (available at your local patchwork shop) to A4 size. Iron the freezer paper onto the back of the fabric (place the shiny side of the freezer paper onto the back of the fabric, and iron on the dull paper side), load it into the printer, then print. (Try printing your photo out on a piece of paper first before printing on the fabric). Peel off the paper and you are ready to use your own unique piece of fabric. Give it a press with an iron to set the ink. You can use the same piece of freezer paper over and over again.

I've embellished the photo with a little embroidery in the corners. Before embroidering, I ironed on some fabric stabiliser. When finished sewing the design, I placed the glass (that came with the frame) over the embroidered photo and traced around it. Then trimmed that fabric away. Next, I used some spray adhesive on the back of the fabric, and stuck it onto the glass

A most comprehensive account of our earliest ancestors in Australia and Wales, by a noted cousin, an accredited Historian. She has written an invaluable book of our whole history. My only criticism is she fails to admit that our ancestor Maria Haynes was a convict girl given seven years sentence of transportation.

Ellen’s prisoner identification photograph, taken to show that she had all of her fingers. 1887.

1887 Ellen Thomson became the only woman legally hanged in Queensland. She was sentenced over the murder of her husband, William Thomson, 24 years her senior, after increasingly violent confrontations. She proclaimed her innocence but her young handsome English ex-marine lover, John Harrison, was also convicted for the same crime. They were hanged in Boggo Road jail, Brisbane, and buried there.

Ellen, 11 years of age and her sister Mary, 9, arrived in Australia on the 6th of April 1858 on board the ship "Joshua". The ship's manifest lists their widowed mother Mary Lynch as a native of County Cork, Ireland. They would join her sister residing in Goulburn, N.S.W.
During the Palmer River gold rush in the early 1870's, Ellen was known to be in Cooktown, widow of William Wood, and struggling to support her children.
Arriving in Port Douglas about 1878, Ellen commenced work as housekeeper to William Thomson who had selected a farm on the Mossman River. Ellen and Billy Thomson married in November of 1880 after the birth of a daughter, Helen.

By 1886 life was difficult. The marriage was strained, the children sent away.

The friendship of Ellen with a young marine deserter on the adjoining "Bonnie Doon" selection caused conflict.

That conflict would explode into murder and the execution of Ellen Thomson and John Harrison at Boggo Road Gaol, Brisbane on the 13th of June 1887.

On the eve of execution, Harrison confessed he alone shot and killed William Thomson in self-defence.

The admission came too late - the double execution proceeded!

The name of Ellen Thomson was written into history as the only woman ever hanged in Queensland

Purity of race has never existed. People couple and produce children throughout the world from one group to another through history and prehistory.

Genetic selection is the norm and genes are forever trying new combinations. The most adept combinations survive.

From the time William Nash (who appears to have been English, coupled and finally married Maria Haynes, (apparently English) the family evolved genetically in a few generations. These combinations do not seem to have weakened the Williams/ Nash (plus other family names) family at all. In fact the tribe has survived, flourished.

Considering a small part of the family tree, the closest to me, the first generation was probably English but then Welsh made an appearance. Northern Irish arose. Soon the mystery of Aboriginal admixture is alleged to have arrived.

Some early photos show young women of distinct middle eastern appearance,( though this may have been the light). Jewish appeared in at least one other branch of the family. Also let us not forget the Scots influence.

More recently Greek, Filipino, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese have also arrived. There may have been more if one were to delve further. There was one near connection with South African mixed race, though no children came from it.

That is enough to show how a family can evolve in just a few generations..Ric Williams.

Already I have received several e-mails questioning my Chinese and Japanese inclusion.

It happens that my sons Richard's and John's mother's grandmother was part Japanese.

My son Brian's grandparent was part Chinese (It is said).

My daughter Nina's mother Aphroditi was Greek but also part Italian since her mother was a Di Tivoli, from the Count Di Tivoli. Aphroditi's father came from the island of Crete

that had once been Minoan.

Nina's half sister Kristi's father was of Turkish origin.

My son Brian's half sisters are half German. That is probably not all. Oh, yes, my sister Sue's children are half Greek whose father was Athenian.

My Aunt Ida (Bonnie O'Keefe) married a Filipino after she had married a Jewish butcher, Cyril Myers.

Pete Seeger besides having been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has been active in the Environmental movement for decades. In October, 2007, a movie about Pete’s life was released, calledThe Power of Song. No matter your opinion about Pete or the issues he championed, he is a truly American voice, and one worth listening to.

Horseracing had become well established in and around Sydney by 1810. The first official race meeting was organised by officers of Governor Macquarie's visiting 73rd Regiment and held at Hyde Park, Sydney in October 1810. The Australian Jockey Club (AJC) held its meetings at Homebush from 1842 to 1859, before moving to Randwick in 1860. The AJC has its headquarters at Randwick where it plays a major role in the regulation of the sport. The Sydney Turf Club (STC) was formed in 1943 and holds races on the Rosehill Gardens track and at Canterbury. This club was the initiator of the world’s richest race for two-year-olds, the Golden Slipper Stakes.

In Victoria the first official races were held in March 1838 on a specially marked out course at Batman's Hill in Melbourne. The Victorian Racing Club (VRC) was formed from the amalgamation in 1864 of the Victoria Jockey Club and Victoria Turf Club.

Queensland’s first recorded race meeting was held at Cooper’s Plains in 1843. The major race club, the Queensland Turf Club (QTC), was formed in 1863, followed by the Brisbane Amateur Turf Club (BATC) in 1923.

South Australia’s first meeting was held at Adelaide in 1843. The principal race club, theSouth Australian Jockey Club (SAJC), was founded in 1856.

Organised racing was first held in Tasmania in 1814 at Newtown, near Hobart. The Tasmanian Turf Club (TTC) was formed in 1871, but the major club, the Tasmanian Racing Club (TRC), was not established until 1874.

Thoroughbred racing commenced in Western Australia in 1836. The Western Australian Turf Club (WATC) was established in 1852.^[8]

By 1883, 192 country clubs were registered to race under Australian Jockey Club rules.^[6]

In the Northern Territory, the Darwin Turf Club was established in May 1955.^[13]

An early importation to Australia was the Arabian stallion (Old) Hector, whose bloodlines are to be found in the pedigreesof some Australian Thoroughbreds.

The first horses that came to Australia arrived on the “Lady Penrhyn” with the First Fleet on 26 January 1788. It is thought that they consisted of one stallion, one colt, three mares and two fillies from Cape Town, South Africa.^[2] (Young) Rockingham was one of the first bloodhorses to be imported into Australia, c.1797.^[3] In 1802 the stallion, Northumberland, and an English mare were imported, followed shortly thereafter by Washington, a stallion from America. (Old) Hector, was an important Arabian horse that was imported to Australia c.1803 and whose bloodlines have survived in Australian Thoroughbred pedigrees. Northumberland and Hector were the two leading sires in Australia until 1820.^[4] These sires and a number of other Arabian stallions contributed to the breeding up of the bloodhorse population prior to 1825.^[5] Manto, imported in 1825, was the first General Stud Bookrecorded Thoroughbred mare known by name to arrive in Australia. Her family is still producing winners. In 1826 the Thoroughbred stallion Peter Fin, and mares Cutty Sark and Spaewife, were imported.^[6]

The first recorded public auction of bloodstock took place in 1805. After the 1830s more English bred horses were imported and racing, as more racing clubs were formed in the country areas of New South Wales.^[7]

Sarah Williams (nee Nash) daughter of Maria Nash (nee Haynes) and William Nash Marine, who arrived at Sydney Cove on the FIRST FLEET 1788.

John Williams was born in Brecknock, Wales in 1787. He joined the army while still in his teens. He deserted in 1806, was arrested and sentenced to 7 years transportation. John was among the 189 convicts who arrived in Sydney aboard the "Duke of Portland" on 27th July 1807.

In 1839, whilst living at Burra John Williams was granted a license for the squattage run of Head of Curry Creek in the Nimmitabel district. After some years at the Curry Creek Run, Williams moved to a new run known as The Gullies, later namedGrosses Plain at Ingebyra. He died of exposure after being caught in a blizzard on Grosses Plain, at 67 years of age.

John and Sarah Williams had a family of 13 and a considerable number of descendents remain in the Monaro area.

In 1880, when a Post Office was established in the Burra area it was called Williamsdale. This was to honour John Williamsas one of the first residents of the district.

The Williams name will be written into the history of Nimmitabel.

Alec Williams is best remembered for his many years in the Post Office at Nimmitabel. Alec knew the machinations of the postal service intricately and, coupled with his great command of figures, was a trusted and loyal employee for many years.

He also audited the accounts of most organisations in Nimmitabel and all could be assured that the books were true and correct. The "A.R. Williams" seal was accepted without question. Alec's wife Eileen was a delightful lady, loved by all who knew her. She would have been recognised as one of the best cooks in Nimmitabel.

Joffre Williams was a gentle giant, a tall imposing man possessed of the most gentle and lovable nature. He will always be remembered with affection in Nimmitabel. Joff's widow Monnie, who lives in Bega, is afforded the same love and respect.

Then we have Jack, the consummate horseman. He has an innate understanding of the horse psyche and has had a lifelong bond with his horses, who have served him well in his work and leisure. Jack is a credible judge of horses and rode daily well into his eighties. He has unshakeable faith in cattle and in the land generally. I can safely say they both have given him a rich and satisfying life.

Although Jack now lives in Currawarna at Bombala, he is still a great teller of yams about the characters of Nimmitabel.

Jack's wife Jean died 26 years ago, but she will be fondly remembered as a warm caring person with a vibrant personality, a great sense of humour and the ability to get along with everyone. She was also an excellent cook, being successful in all district shows.

Thanks to the efforts of Howard Charles, we now have Lake Williams as a monument to the Williams family.

Hard Life at Sea

Does the thought of travelling the world on a damp and creaking vessel, eating meals of insect-ridden, brittle biscuits, with a very good possibility of dying from disease, violent conflict, or falling off the topmast in high seas make you want to set sail on an expedition of exploration? Perhaps not. Even in the 18th century, British writer Samuel Johnson (1709–1784) showed scepticism for the sailor’s way of life when he stated: “No man will be a sailor who has contrivance enough to get himself into a jail; for, being in a ship is being in a jail, with the chance of being drowned.... A man in a jail has more room, better food and commonly better company.”

Quarters were cramped and shared by humans, rats, and other vermin. Hygiene was a challenge, especially when most sailors only had a single set of clothing – a good crust of salt and grease was seen as a barrier to the elements. Dangers and hardships abounded, from Arctic ice to scurvy, conflict, and flogging. Gruelling physical labour and low pay were expected, and alcohol, prostitutes, and the high cost of replacing worn out clothing from the ship’s stores cleaned out the pockets of many expeditionary members before the ships reached home port. Even captains met their share of troubles in unruly crewmembers, health complaints, and political intrigues that could ruin their careers and reputations.

Yet sailors and overland expeditionary forces came to the Pacific Northwest in steady waves during the 1700s. There was food for the sailors when many at home had none, there was adventure when their brothers lived life behind a plough, and there was the promise of comradeship, revelry in exotic lands, and even a glimmer of hope that trade (unsanctioned for personal gain, of course) might earn them some wealth. They marvelled at sights and experiences that most could never even imagine. In the 18th century, health improved and sailor deaths declined under new measures for safety and nutrition. For captains, expedition leaders, and officers, renown, promotion, and publication of their journals held the allure of expanding scientific knowledge and national pride. Daily life on an expedition was part of a greater experience that made weevils in the biscuits and the experiments of the ship’s surgeon a little more bearable.

Conditions for the poor in England...chimney- sweep children.

It often happened that when the boy was sent up the chimney was still hot from the recent use of the fire; and the poor little creature got severely burnt. It was proved beyond question or doubt that in many cases a boy who stuck fast in a still heated chimney, was found to be dead when at last he was dragged back to the hearth. The poor little creatures were dressed in a short gown of sacking, which was so covered with soot that it looked as if it never could be made clean again - and probably, indeed, no attempt was ever tried to make it clean again. The soot of one day's deposit was added to the soot of the former day, and after the first day or two the keenest unprofessional eye could not have detected any difference in the black accumulation. There was something peculiarly grim, pathetic and touching in Charles Lamb's description of the climbing boys as "these almost clergy imps." The faces of the poor boys were always covered and clotted with soot; and as the master sweep's countenance generally bore the same appearance, perhaps as a professional symbol, it was not likely that any great use was made of soap and water to give the climbing boy a short and futile interval of cleanliness. For years and for generations people went on taking no notice of the sufferings of the little sweeps; the ordinary householder grew accustomed to them - it is very easy to grow accustomed to the routine sufferings' of other human creatures - and it never occurred to most persons to ask themselves whether humanity could do nothing in the matter. The philanthropists, as usual, were the first to stir in the wretched business These philanthropists would not even be content to let the master sweep do what he liked with his own climbing boys. In some cases they were literally his own climbing boys; for it was shown in evidence that master sweeps of the worst class had sometimes, for the sake of economy, employed their own children in sweeping the householder's chimneys. Here again the philanthropists were not to be daunted; they insisted on the right of legislation to interfere between the parent and his child when the parent set his child to the filthy and dangerous work of a climbing boy. The philanthropists carried their way in the end; they set about rousing public opinion, and they did at last thoroughly rouse public opinion. A mountain of evidence was produced to show the horrors of the system.

It was proved that in many cases master sweeps had actually employed little girls to do the abominable work; and it was stated in Liverpool, and so far as we know never contradicted, that in one case at least a master sweep who had a wife, a young, small, and slender woman, passed her off as a boy and employed her in the climbing of chimneys. In many cases, as it was proved by uncontradicted evidence, when a poor child stuck fast in a chimney a master sweep declared that the boy was only shamming, that he was lazy and stubborn, and accordingly ordered a fire to be again lighted in the grate, so as to compel the unfortunate creature to mount the chimney in order to escape from the flames. Of course the extreme cases thus brought forward in the evidence did not even profess to be an illustration of the common ways of the trade. Many of the master sweeps were decent poor fellows enough : but there was the trade, under the same conditions as those which they had always known to belong to it; and when the respected and educated householder in the towns, when the county gentleman, and even the clergyman, made no objection to the practice, how was the poor sweep to find out that the employment of climbing boys was a disgrace to humanity? Such, however, it was; and so it was soon proved to be. The master sweep and his ways began to be a horror to the whole community. The Saracens, we read, used to frighten their naughty children into submission by threatening to hand them over to be dealt with by King Richard of England. In days that some of us can still remember many a rebellious infant was frightened into good order by the threat that he would be handed over to the master sweep.

The use of drones as spotters, enabling cars, houses and individuals to blown up anywhere in the world, has resulted in thousands of civilian deaths, mostly under-reported. Anti-terrorism is being cited as the reason for these acts of warfare, but the acts by multi-national agencies and the governments they control are the real terrorist acts.

Most people are unaware of these horrible developments and are kept preoccupied by music and fashion fads, entertainment, watching sports, and the pursuit of more unnecessary consumer goods and the acquisition of money.

The kind of skewed education available keeps the population
