I was talking with a twelve-year-old neighour a couple of days ago. We were discussing the floods in my home country Australia.
"I don't understand, Ric why there is so much trouble with widespread floods and other times there are droughts that go on for years. Why can't they just keep the water somewhere?"Asked the young fellow.
"Well David," I answered..." they do dam up a lot of water but most of it runs out to sea by the coastal rivers. You see there's a mountain range just in from the eastern coast and it runs all up and down the east coast blocking the rain from reaching inland Australia, which suffers mostly from drought."
David thought for a few seconds.
"Yes," said David "by why don't they cut tunnels through the mountains and let all the surplus water run through to the inland. Wouldn't that fix the problem.?"
"It probably would fix the problem. But Australian governments are pretty dumb.
What are you going to be when you grow up, David?"
"I think I would like to be an engineer."
I laughed. "You seem to be one already, mate."
