Chimpanzees are great apes that are closely related to humans. These intelligent primates live in a variety of environments in western and central Africa. Because of the rapid deforestation of their habitats, chimpanzees are an endangered species. It may seem like the Chimpanzee is always goofing around, but even during plan they are learning. They are very curious creatures and have amazing abilities to grasp what is going on around them. It is this level of intelligence that has helped them to thrive in a variety of environments for millions of years. Through a tremendous amount of research it is a well known fact that Chimpanzees are highly intelligent animals. They have the ability for various forms of communication and for being able to learn. They are able to adapt to different situations based on problem solving rather than instinct. For instance we can take the case of Jimmy the chimp that enjoys and just loves to paint.
27 year old chimp Jimmy, is a retired circus chimpanzee who paints to overcome his solitude. People are flocking to the poorly funded Niteroi zoo, in Rio de Janeiro to watch this amazing chimpanzee. For the past 10 years jimmy has lived all by himself in an enclosure. His keepers did their best to keep his his spirits up, by getting him games, candies, sugary snacks and what not, but nothing cured jimmy’s depression and loneliness to all such things until he was given a canvas, brushes and paints. And guess what he enjoyed this painting thing a lot. He was actually happy. Since then he has painted a dozens of painting demonstrating an artistic talent rarely seen in primates.
Realising this bonafide talent in their midst, the zoo decided to help jimmy to polish this talent of art. An art instructor now visits the chimp thrice a week. Jimmy has now become a celebrity in brazil and in a very short time will become an international star. With a hope to earn for the zoo, 20 of Jimmy’s paintings are planned to sale.
But fame pays a price. Recently, jimmy was forced to wear the shirt of a local soccer team as a publicity stunt, for example. Other such mistreatments have drawn animal rights groups to stand for the chimp’s defence. Several NGOs recently filed a motion of habeas corpus to have Jimmy released into better conditions — a legal maneuver which has been successfully applied to primates in the past, further blurring the line between human and animal. Advocary organisations, like the Primate support group argued that jimmy’s confinement was unlawful, for as chimpanzees who has 99% similar DNA to that of humans, should be given rights which are given to humans. They suggested that Jimmy be transferred to a wildlife sanctuary where he would be free to live more as nature intended.
